Was Jesus the first to be baptized?

Post by _Mad Viking »

According to my wife's bishop he was. I have always been under the impression that John the Baptist was out in the wilderness baptizing people before Jesus came to him. I also though that Alma was baptizing before the birth of Christ. Have I forgotten my Bible/Book of Mormon stories?

He made this claim during my oldest's baptism interview. Yes, I know, I am a failure.

My guess is that all those folks who weren't on the Ark were the first to be baptized...too bad they didn't take that remedial swimming class at the Y.
Whatever appears to be against the Book of Mormon is going to be overturned at some time in the future. So we can be pretty open minded.-charity 3/7/07

Blow your son's mind, and annoy the bishop, by showing him in the Book of Mormon where Alma actually baptised himself.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

Here you go:

Moses 6: 64-65
64 And it came to pass, when the Lord had spoken with Adam, our father, that Adam cried unto the Lord, and he was caught away by the Spirit of the Lord, and was carried down into the water, and was laid under the water, and was brought forth out of the water.
65 And thus he was baptized, and the Spirit of God descended upon him, and thus he was born of the Spirit, and became quickened in the inner man.

At this time, I don't remember exactly, who did translate that Moses verses from what available documents/scripts?

What are the other translations of the same man?
What are the available sources/originals of those other translations?

one moment, of the well of life to taste-

No, Jesus was not the first to be Baptised, I am sure you will ind this in the Bible if you have a look. John the Baptist was baptising when Jesus went up to him to be baptised then more followed him. Otherwise, why would he have been known as John the Baptist?

There were no originals, The book of Moses was 'received' by 'revelation'. Or Joseph Smith just made it up (take your pick)

So theoretically it should be perfect - no translation problems, no quibbling over what an original hebrew word really means.

I look back to Joseph Campbell's Transformation of Myth Through Time series and realize that what was done had roots in what was done before. Didn't Horus have some cleansing by Anup the Baptizer in the Nile? Seems the followers of Mithra were also baptized in holy water and also partook of a sacred meal of bread and wine. This cleansing ritual must be one of the archetype symbols of the human consciousness.
