I just tried to re-register under my user name there and access was denied (which I thought might happen). I'm not using another name because I insist on using the screen name I've always used on Mormon-related boards. If I registered under another name it would mean I won't have access to my PMs, nor any rights associated with my former registration name, and that's not acceptable to me. So Rom either comes here, or I agree with Scratch:

I think LoaP has shown some, what shall I say for want of a better word, "progressive" thinking in some areas. But he hasn't gone any where near the thinking of someone like "Noah", who posted on Rom's thread. You just don't see this stuff coming from apologists.

Good for LOaP. That is a very promising sign for the Church and perhaps MAD as well.

I am still holding out hope that Rommelator summons up enough courage to defend his arguments here on this board. Otherwise, it will be obvious to all that he is merely preaching to the choir, and looking to bolster his "shaken faith."

Think back for a moment: none of us was afraid of standing up to the TBMs, including some rather reprobate individuals such as Pahoran, juliann, and Scott Lloyd, over on the FAIR/MADboard. I myself was called some rather nasty names, but did I cower behind the unbelievably lame excuse that the comments were "over-the-top"? No. I did not.

You make an excellent point here, Scratch. It has consistently been the case that, with a few laudable or baffling exceptions, the apologists have run from the critics. Of course, we all understand why. The stakes for the believers are the end of belief and the end of participation in a cherished community. There are too few apologists who are brilliant enough (DCP, Hamblin, Midgley), temperamentally hardy enough (Crocket? Nehor?), or thick enough (names withheld to protect the dense) to take the challenges that some of the past and current posters here dish(ed) out.

Take, for example, beastie's sustained criticism of the new MMM book. I saw potential problems in the book, but she pretty thoroughly demonstrated the wool its authors were pulling over the eyes of even seasoned historians. It is difficult to hold onto the sacred cows apologists fabricate when they are pulled apart right before your eyes by persistent critics. Consider all of the insights that Ray A has brought us, or the obliteration of the Book of Abraham by Kevin Graham, Chris Smith, and Don Bradley. Although some of what happens here might be fairly characterized as craps and giggles, there has been enough substance that shows the clear problems in the apologetic camp to raise real questions, if not convincingly persuade that the emperor truly has no clothes.

If one wants to maintain faith in the gospel of Joseph Smith, then the best policy for most people is to stay far away from Shady Acres.

Yeah, I'm reminded of the crap Will said to John about his marriage.

It was absolutely inexcusable! Easily one of the most disgusting posts I've ever seen. Something that would have gotten a critic banned on the spot. But Will was allowed to continue to post as if John somehow deserved it.

I think that Obiwan will soon be added to the list of jerks at MAD. Even Selek had to tell him to calm it down.
