damned if you do, damned if you don't... (about prop 8)
Ok, so Smac is over on MAD posting every situation he can find where gays are "outing" Mormons in various businesses who are being pressured in their jobs, and resigning over it.
I'm not really sure what to think of this situation, but there is a certain whiff of witch hunting about it. I must note, however, that so far, both cases Smac has brought up, were people in California who happen to work in industries just loaded with gay people (the arts), and these people donated over $1000 to the Yes on 8 fund. Just what in the hell did they think all the gays who patronize and work with their businesses think was going to happen? Sounds kinda like going into Harlem and waving around the Confederate Flag while wrapped in a sheet.
Then we have the situation of Andrew Callahan, who has apparently been threatened with excommunication over his public opposition to Prop 8.
So, two Mormons who donated to Yes on 8 have been hounded from their jobs, and the Mormon Church is looking at excommunicating a High Priest who publicly denounced Prop 8.
Sounds to me like damned if you do (support 8), damned if you don't (support 8).

Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

Is that stereotype about gays in the arts reality or stereotype? I know of a few gays in software. Heck, one of the fathers of modern computing, Alan Turing, was gay. Makes me wonder if it's just that gays in the arts are more noticeable. Or maybe they go for arts because they think they'll meet more gays?
I agree that prop 8 is a no-win thing--it's so divisive that it makes me wonder if any side has really considered if it's worth it or whether some compromise is possible. In fact, I know of some who have looked for compromise (civil unions for all), but somehow they don't seem to be the loudest voices. Actually, I think that even if they aren't the loudest they are the most numerous.

Do you think the stereotype of gays taking up hairdressing, or being florists, is true?

Add TV chef ( I know one) to that. Having lived in Hollyweird, I'd say many of the stereotypes are true though I'd freely admit most stereotypical gays seem to congragate in communities like these (SF, Oak Lawn etc.). Outside such communities, they are a little harder to detect.

Sounds kinda like taking a job at the COB and voting "no" on 8, donating money and advertising.
Lou Midgley 08/20/2020: "...meat wad," and "cockroach" are pithy descriptions of human beings used by gemli? They were not fashioned by Professor Peterson.

I know a gay hairdresser and a gay florist. And a gay office manager. So that proves the stereotyping is right, right?
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

What about all the homosexulas that, if they did come out, would lose THEIR jobs? I think that reality far outpaces the few examples what's-his-nuts could uncover.

Flawless logic. Many documented examples of persons who donated rather modest sums in favor of Prop 8 being hounded, persecuted and fired versus what might happen to homosexuals who might come out of the closet and might suffer job discrimination (which I might add, is illegal and actionable).
Flawless.

Military being the exception of course.. Try flawed..
God has the right to create and to destroy, to make like and to kill. He can delegate this authority if he wishes to. I know that can be scary. Deal with it.

That was pretty much what I was getting at.

So. Over the course of just ten years the US military has fired over 8,000 people for being homosexual. 8,000. How many Mormons-being-fired-for-being-Mormon has what's-his-nuts uncovered?
