Personally, I think he's pulling our legs. Nobody is that fanatical.

What did Jesus say again about "out of the abundance of the heart", and it's not what goes into the belly that deflies, but that which comes out of the mouth?

Leg pulling or no leg pulling, Wheat reeks of innate violence.

Well, yeah. Violence or no, he's still a self-righteous ass. Incidentally, I was reading today about Sidney Rigdon's letter delivered to dissenters in Far West, giving them 3 days to clear out or be forcibly removed. Their families were turned out of their homes, and their household goods, food, animals, and farm equipment were seized by the Saints. This innate violence has been around a long time, hasn't it?

I think it was more prevalent in the early days of the Church, certainly, to quite a shocking degree. If you missed This Review of The Mountain Meadows Massacre apologia, posted earlier on beastie's MMM thread, it's worth reading.

Definitely good stuff from beastie. The Turley book is embarrassing in its Packer-esque treatment of history.

Reminds me of Paul Ray calling Dan Peterson an "anti-Mormon". LOL. There are some wackos in the Church alright.

I was worried that I may have misjudged the offensive nature of my comments over on MAD, so I decided to peform an experiment and do a field test.

We had a family Thanksgiving gathering of about 14 adults. All the adults are active LDS, with 4 I would classify as solidly "TBM". I spent a good 20 minutes trying to maneuver the conversation to the point where I could logically comment about President Hinckley "checking out" in advance of Romney's run, the FLDS fiasco, and the Prop 8 fallout (as well as knowing that his days on Larry King were also coming to an end.)

The joke got a huge response, and no one was offended that I could tell. My wife knew exactly what I was doing, so I think she laughed the hardest. But no one raised so much as an eyebrow at the joke.

It must have been the delivery.

The problem was, without doubt, the audience when you first delivered it.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

Indubitably.

Tough crowd.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen
