Yes, the example of others does matter. If I had lived in Utah before joining the LDS Church I never would have joined. Watching friends while we lived there was an eye opening experience in Mormondom.
Most of my friends turned out to be non-LDS. They couldn't believe that I was and was friendly to them at first. Some had kids who had no one in their neighborhood who would play with them because they were not LDS. Others had their homes avoided on halloween as the LDS neighbors on the street had kids galore trick or treating at their door. I sat with one on Halloween after he moved into his new house and we watched as the kids went from door to door but none came to his or the neighbor next to him, both Not LDS.

Yes, example matters. A lot. All the preaching in the world can't overcome reality in meeting people.
