How did Peter stay a church leader
after murdering Judas? Per Joseph Smith and his teachings it was revealed to him that Peter personally hanged Judas.
Murder apparently didn't mean much then, did it?
Is this the justification for Danites, Mountain Meadows, blood atonement and a lot of other hushed up garbage?

Hi squawkeye
I have never heard of this one. Do you have a reference? Do you mean it is in the "Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith" by Joseph Fielding Smith?
Thanx in advance......interesting.

I think it would be morally right to lie about your religion to edit the article favorably.

The above is one. It isn't the first I have read. I also heard it preached from the pulpit in the Tabernacle years ago(early 1970's) in Salt Lake City.

Re: How did Peter stay a church leader
This doctrine, which completely contradicts the atoning work of the shed blood of Christ, was birthed in a vision of Joseph Smith’s in which he said he was visited by the apostle Peter who told him that he (Peter) had killed Judas – that he had hung him for betraying Christ.

While some may have problems with any cite by Utah Lighthouse Ministry I have found in looking up their reference material that is has always been correct. Since I have heard some of 'the Twelve' say what the above statements say I tend to believe they teach this.

Neither canonized nor correlated. Thus it has the same or less even acceptance than Zelph, the Quakers on the Moon, and assorted other "revelatory" nonsense spouted by Joseph in an off moment.
Joseph was a story teller. It's what he did best.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

Only source for the story comes from an apostate after his apostasy. No friend of the Prophet ever recorded such a statement.

I guess its a good thing that he continues to have followers who decide which of the things he said were crap and which were gold. It certainly changes over time.

That's called continuing revelation and it's a very handy tool.

Re: How did Peter stay a church leader
How convenient to discount what Joseph Smith said when you don't like it. Zelph was recorded by at least 5 from the time it happened. It was reported in Church documents and written about by Joseph Smith to Emma, one of his wives. (I don't want to refer to her as his wife as I don't want to slight all the others)
With both Joseph and Brigham saying people lived on the moon, how do you know what reality is and what false reporting and lies are?
The same people who now discount what was said by splitting hairs and arguing about which witness was witless and which was reliable..., and under what circumstances they were reliable and which they were just clueless idiots, have no clue. We have the written record to go on and that is what we read.
Joseph taught it to his followers. Some current Church leaders believe it. How convenient to pick and choose what is 'correct' depending on how it squares with how you want the world to be and whether or not Joseph was a joker rather than a liar.
