No, I don't.

If you insist that you were not implying that I was insensitive or otherwise lacking in regards to my family's situation - then I have been unjustified in my treatment of you for quite sometime. My apologies.

Anyway, back to the original topic:

That's a great find, GoodK. Thank you for your post!

The fact that we can find a similar phenomenon in the non-Mormon Christian milieu makes the Internet Mormon/Chapel Mormon dichotomy that much harder to deny, methinks.

In the church's case--or, at least, in the case of Utah's wealthiest sect of Brighamite Mormonism--it's the very leaders themselves, the ones with the closest "hotline" to God, that appear to be among the "congregation" described in the above video (as opposed to being among the upper-tier theologians).

You're right. I'm a psychopath. (I'm curious what you think is the meaning of the word "phrenological".)

It's a perfectly cromulent word meant to show that liberalism is partly based on pseudo-science. It also appears that harmony can't distinguish between a valid description and a personal attack. The proper response would've been a cfr. But it's you guy's experiment, not mine.....

You haven't even found one in the LDS Church.

Honestly, I'm a little mystified at the insistence that this divide doesn't exist. It should be most obvious to those of us that spend time in the online forums hobnobbing with apologists, and 3 hours on Sunday sitting in the pews and Gospel Doctrine classes. It's like I get to journey back and forth between parallel universes, where people use the same words, but they mean totally different things.

Every week, I'm continually entertained by the total lack of awareness of any sort of apologetic or scholarly line of thought in the discussions at Church. It's not that they object to apologetic arguments, it's more like they don't even know or care that they exist. Studying the Book of Mormon this year has been fun, but I'm really looking forward to next year: Doctrine and Covenants and Church History. Should be fun!

Cinepro, probably the last time I went to Gospel Doctrine class the "scriptorian lady" teaching the class was speculating on what Noah must have felt like as he boarded the ark and closed the door, how it must have pained him as his neighbors started clamoring to get aboard as the rains fell, and how awful Noah must have felt at having to refuse to open the doors and let them in, and the like.

I think that was the tipping point where I "just said no" to continuing to attend GD. This was after I had already lost my testimony and was still attending most weeks just because my wife wanted to. I couldn't take it anymore, and I haven't been back since. I simply will not force myself to go listen to nonsense like this. You're a better man than me, I suppose - or more of a glutton for punishment.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen
