Square Two

Post by _Daniel Peterson »

I thought I would call the attention of those here -- if they haven't already seen it -- to a new LDS venture entitled SquareTwo, an on-line magazine modeled loosely on the first-rate, broadly Catholic, neoconservative magazine First Things:

http://squaretwo.org/

I'm not directly involved in it, myself, and I don't know exactly who is. But two of my friends, Richard Sherlock of the Department of Philosophy at Utah State University and the political philosopher Ralph Hancock of the Department of Political Science at Brigham Young University (both Harvard Ph.D.s) are associated with it, and that promises some good quality work to come.

With the Restored Gospel as a foundation, how would one articulate thought on the pressing issues of the world, the nation, the community, the family, and the individual?

Oh this is a tough one. Let's see, how about they just pull up Droopy's posts from this board and call it a day? I read a little of the material they have up so far, and seriously, they have nothing on Droopy.
Lou Midgley 08/20/2020: "...meat wad," and "cockroach" are pithy descriptions of human beings used by gemli? They were not fashioned by Professor Peterson.

LM 11/23/2018: one can explain away the soul of human beings...as...a Meat Unit, to use Professor Peterson's clever derogatory description of gemli's ideology.

Looks interesting. Hopefully they can give Meridian a run for their money.

It will eat Merridian's dust. And not just because Droopy publishes at Meridian, but because at the rate it's going it will publish 20 articles a year. That's a pretty slow moving conversation. When people encounter a blog/Ezine, they expect things to move faster. Given most of what's being written is fairly shallow right-wing propoganda, there is no excuse for it not to move faster.

We'll see what happens the first time they print something that challenges common LDS views.

Sorry DCP but it looks extremely shallow.

Not a chance Meridian looks very interesting compared to this one

With the Restored Gospel as a foundation, how would one articulate thought on the pressing issues of the world, the nation, the community, the family, and the individual? It is not to be expected that faithfulness to square one would produce consensus on square two, but agreement on foundational matters should provide the groundwork for meaningful exchange of new ideas and insights. At the very least, it is worth the attempt.

While it's possible within the printed rules, the actual moderation at MADB prevents this type of discussion except in the most general and barest of terms. It's too bad.

I doubt very much, s&m, that Square Two is aimed at deep thinkers like yourself.

Ordinary run-of-the-mill intellects, though, may be able to find something worthwhile in the reflections of Profs. Valerie Hudson, Ralph Hancock, Richard Sherlock, and their associates. And that modest achievement may well be enough to justify Square Two's existence.
