Surprisingly, it was Scottie who sent me the note. There was a discussion with Dr. Shades. I'm not sure who was involved, but I find it an interesting move from Dr. Shade's original point of having this forum to now contemplating banishment for some posters.

My understanding was that he sent you a PM stating that if you continued to break the new rule of personal attacks in the Terrestrial and Off Topic forums, you would receive a one week suspension.

If you refer to the experimental rules, that is within Moderator rights to incorporate. The reason this consequence was presented to you is because you have repeatedly, knowingly, broken this rule.

NO ONE has been threatened with banning. We would NOT ban you over this issue.

My suggestion is that you just temper your personal attacks for 24 hours. Shades is having the board pow wow and vote on the experimental rules tomorrow, January 3rd. Why risk a suspension when you can have your voice heard? Obviously, you are going to vote against the new rules.

All we're really asking is that you make our lives a little easier for the next few days. Think of it as a personal favor to me, if nothing else. Bottom line...it's a pain in the ass to split threads. LOL

I like you, Antishock, and I think you add real insight to the board. Can you just help us out a little? Please?

Anyway. I don't really care you ban/suspend me. I enjoy popping in and doing my thing, but if you think I'm too antagonistic then that's your call. I will remind you that I never initiate personal crap with anyone, and in fact, generally give someone a head's up to knock it off. Hrm... How DO mods decide when an ad hom is too much of a personal attack? If you're passive-aggressive like Mr. Peterson is that acceptable? If you use the word "retarded" have you just crossed the Line of No Return? Can you repeatedly call someone stupid, but if you call them fat or a cunt you've crossed the line? How do posters know when he or she has crossed someone's sensibilities, because I see "a lot of work" than ain't gettin' fixed. Are there posters who make it a habit to report some behavior by certain posters, while letting their preferred board personalities get a pass? Is this the same with mods?

Look. I understand moderating is a thankless job. And I appreciate the effort and volunteerism. I do. I think Dr. Shades had a nice idea, and I personally support his original vision for a discussion forum. There are safe places to post on the Internet, and there are scary places for the more fragile types.

So. This is my recommendation to Dr. Shades:

1) Post a clear and concise Mission Statement for this board. State CLEARLY the reasons you want this board to exist.

2) Define clearly what an ad hom is to YOU, and then enforce it across the board if that's part of your moderating philosophy.

3) Don't be afraid to ban posters that run afoul of your rules, even if you like them or think they contribute. It creates confusion and mistrust when the rules are applied inconsistently.

4) Keep everything above simple.

All that being said, this board already has essentially FOUR levels of moderation, and a solution for personal attacks. If you don't like being a mod then quit for “F”'s sake.

No way, not at all. I think it was brilliant. She's obviously intelligent and has some insightful things to say. She just needed to get over herself, and get on with posting. And look what happened? She's kickin' Dart's ass in the other thread.
