I met and chatted with his (ex-)wife only briefly, but she seemed really cool. She's also drop-dead gorgeous. Of course it's impossible to know what goes on behind closed doors, but DAMN, from this layman's perspective, he really screwed up!!

This assumes it's not a fake. Given the ways of the Internet, I'd have to say the default assumption should be that it's fake, unless otherwise corroborated.
That being said, his wife married a guy who was going to lead her into the Celestial Kingdom, where she would be literally his Goddess and bear children into all eternity. And he's not doing that anymore (never was, really, but now he realizes that). That can be quite a pill to swallow for a woman. All bets could well be off after something like that.
