If, for example, there were overwhelming,
intellectually decisive evidence for the existence of God, most
rational people would be compelled to accept Him. This would frustrate
the principle of faith by not allowing us to freely follow our hearts and
true desires.
I consider this nothing short of idiotic.
Even if there were overwhelming evidence for God there will be both the open question of what he wanted from us and whether we need/will/want do it.
The part about "frustrating the principle of faith" is especially idiotic. All this time I was told that if there were no God then there would be no morals and men would just do what they wanted. So are atheists the most free to follow their hearts desires and thereby expose who they really are? If lack of sure knowledge of God's existence is what frees men to be themselves then isn't no knowledge of God even better?
Here is what really makes sense:
Men (and women) are who they are and act freely given their understanding of the facts. We make better and more authentic decisions with the facts in hand and this does nothing to undermine who we really are - quite the opposite.
The "principle of faith" as put forth by the quote is silly "double think" that contradicts the common sense we use in every other aspect of our lives. Do we harm children by letting them know that their parents really exist and might punish them or reward them?
Knowledge leads to more authentic freedom--not less. Give me the facts! Give me evidence. Give me common sense and a healthy skepticism of fantastic claims!
