I didn't say "ward building", "stake center" or "bishop's office". I said "chapel".

There were pictures of Christ all over the chapel in California where I attended as a boy.

I suspect you were a boy long before the edict came to take all the pictures of Christ out of the chapels.

I've never heard of any policy forbidding paintings of Christ.

And since you've never heard of it, it doen't exist? I think there's probably several things you've never heard of, but they still exist.

There is no policy forbidding paintings of Christ in the building. There is a policy forbidding paintings of Christ in the chapel.

I was in the Church Administration Building on Friday, and there were paintings of Christ throughout it.

Probably its the Church Administration Building, not a chapel.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

Gadianton's vision of an apologetics conference center takes me back to October 21, 1995, when I opened the pages of the Church News and read the following article:

FARMS SLATES APRIL AS GROUNDBREAKING FOR NEW BUILDING

Groundbreaking for a new 25,000-square-foot building for The Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies is tentatively scheduled for next April, according to Brent Hall, FARMS director of development and operations. Construction of the building will take approximately 18 months to complete, he said.

The site is the hill adjacent to the south end of the BYU campus.

FARMS recently entered into a protocol agreement with BYU that facilitates cooperation in research about the Book of Mormon and other ancient scriptures. (See Sept. 2 Church News.) The organization, which is independent of BYU and the Church, has been administering its programs out of buildings near campus that have become inadequate.

"The new building will greatly increase FARMS' ability to serve the needs of the Church and the BYU community,'' said FARMS president Noel Reynolds. "The facility will have special resources for campus visitors and BYU students and faculty.''

The design of the new building suggests elements of the world of the Bible - a dome, arches and pyramid - and the world of the Book of Mormon - stone work reminiscent of Meso-American pyramids and other structures.

The five-story building will include two levels of underground parking, a level for public functions, a level for offices and research areas and a level for audio and video recording, research offices and distribution areas.

A display hall where visitors can view exhibits of the LDS scriptural heritage will be included in the new building . Permanent exhibits about the Book of Mormon , as well as timely displays about research as it is occurring, will be featured. The facility will also accommodate informal gatherings for lectures and tours.

A lecture hall will accommodate approximately 150 people. It will be used for lectures on scriptural topics as well as for film presentations on the Book of Mormon for broadcast on television and radio.

A library will be a resource center containing computers, books and helps for students working on papers and projects about the Book of Mormon. Reference materials will also be available through the Internet. The library will contain the electronic FARMS Book of Mormon Bibliography, which contains more than 10,000 annotated entries of Book of Mormon scholarship.

FARMS will use private donations to pay for the building because it does not receive funding from the Church or the university, Brother Reynolds said.
“A scholar said he could not read the Book of Mormon, so we shouldn’t be shocked that scholars say the papyri don’t translate and/or relate to the Book of Abraham. Doesn’t change anything. It’s ancient and historical.” ~ Hanna Seariac

Ah, right. Your annual Mopologetic "debriefing" with the GAs.

For any non-Scratches who may be paying attention, just for the record:

My meeting at the Church Administration Building had absolutely nothing whatever to do with Mormon apologetics.

Riiiiiiggghht. And you "never" received any money for Mopologetics. I think we know just how trustworthy you are when it comes to these things, Prof. P.

As you're probably aware, chapel, in LDS usage, is an ambiguous term that can refer either to a Latter-day Saint church building or to the hall within such a building that has been specifically set apart for worship services (rather than, say, classes, basketball, or heating food).

At this point, having been your target on prior occasions, I could perhaps begin suggesting that you need writing lessons, etc. But, of course, I won't.

I appreciate the fact that you've now clarified what you meant.

But the policy allows paintings of Joseph Smith, Thomas Monson, Hugh Nibley, and/or Mitt Romney?

As I said, I was speaking to non-Scratches.

And, by non-Scratches, I mean people who are neither themselves Scratches nor of the Scratchite persuasion. I know for a fact that there are several non-Scratches here on this message board.

A picture of Picasso's Guernica would be great for their Think Tank room.

Perhaps by the entrance a portrait of Hugh Nibley

...and by the exit a picture of Edvard Munch's The Scream.

A long-time favorite of mine. I've even alluded to it in print.

Where I live, the ward building is called, strangely enough, the ward building. Or the church house. The chapel is the place where the pews, the stand, and the organ are kept inside the church house, and is... strangely enough... called the chapel. We don't call our ward building a chapel. Obviously this is one more way we are different from those who live in Utah.

At this point, having been your target on prior occasions, I could perhaps begin suggesting that you need writing lessons, etc. But, of course, I won't.

Excellent choice. You get smarter every day.

I believe it covers paintings, period. We have a painting of Christ in our chapel, along with the pews, the organ, and the sacrament trays. Do you have a similiar picture? Or are you obedient to every word that comes out of SLC?
