For example, the reporter stated polygamy became outlawed in the church in 1890. The church leaders only appeased the government with the manifesto and went back to performing plural marriages in secret. A quick search on google would have tipped them off that LDS.org is not the most honest source of information.
I think the reporters recognized the effort by the Apostles to help bridge the gap of misunderstanding between the Church and the rest of the world.
Rather than being shoddy journalism, I think they were indeed trying to help the Church be more open, thus they did not press too hard. The four reporters wanted to help them get their message across in an unbiased manner.
