Well I was actually at BYU last nite! It has been over 20 years since last time I was on the campus.

At the invitation of a close business friend, who happens to be a UNLV booster, we took time out from our stay in Deer Valley and made the trip down to Provo to watch BYU play UNLV. Only wish I had time to get over to the academic famous "Olivewood" bookstore!

I have to admit that the BYU crowd is no less loud, rowdy and vulgar than any other stadium I've been in. When the four black players from UNLV took to the floor on the opening tip-off against the five white BYU players. I had to wonder, based on comments from fans around me, if the priesthood ban had actually been lifted! And I learned that the only white player in UNLV's starting line-up was from the Provo area with all of the "stupid traitor" comments coming from the same fans.

Even CBS's sportscaster, and former UNLV natl champ Anderson Hunt was not spared from some fan spouted "colorful" insults.

Yes, it was a very rowdy crowd w a "less than pleasant" vocabulary second to none I have witnessed - at least for the first half. Things were pretty quiet in the second half! I understand this was their first loss in some 60 games at home?

Anyway, just one man's observation: BYU fans can sling it w the worst of them!

Very nice arena though! Just needs beer sales!

Too funny - you forgot the best part however is that YBU lost 76-70 to UNLV.

So the kid is held accountable for the behavior and beliefs of his parents. How nice of BYU folk IF this is actually true. From what I have seen living in Utah I can believe it but still would like some solid evidence it is true.

As for Utah and attitudes towards blacks and other minorities, that is one good reason we no longer live there. I have spent some years doing checks for corporations looking to relocate and/or expand their operations into new States and Cities. As such I have checked out a number of Utah cities for some of them. One in particular was looking at Brigham City to open a new non-polluting facility. I visited there a number of times over a three month period. I always allow a minimum of six months and a number of visits to draft a comprehensive opinion as to how the location 'feels' during a number of visits and different seasons. The recommendation I gave the Board of Directors was negative. This was based on hearing a discussion of 'damn niggers lost the game' in three cafes in Brigham City after BYU had lost a football game and a few more than that after losing a basketball game. Add in the attitude of many I met and talked with as far as 'outsiders' coming into the town and there was no way I could recommend it.

I did a check for an outdoor equipment corporation a number of years ago and recommended NO on the move to Utah while giving them three alternatives in other States with good outdoor recreation, higher education and a number of other attractive attributes. The corporation moved their operation to Salt Lake City from the Ventura/Santa Barbara coastal area of California. They lost almost 30% of their employees who would not move with them. They were replaced as any good company does. In talking with the CEO a number of times since their move he has expressed sadness with the move. The money is better than ever. Higher profits, good workers who do the jobs at considerably less than in California.

Trouble is, they are not accepted by the highly Mormon population where they are located and where many of their employees have moved to. A number have neighbors who will not play with their kids because they are 'not Mormon'. Some have Halloween pass with no Trick or Treaters coming to their door though they visit the neighbors on both sides of them. Again, apparently because they are 'not Mormon'.
He said he has lost a number of his best employees due to their not liking Utah because of the closed and prejudiced society. If he had it to do over again he would not make the move. He can't move back now because the properties he sold to relocate are no longer available and part of his philosophy was/is to be very employee friendly with day care, flexible time and freedom to walk the beaches during good weather, etc.

I can believe BYU attitudes and the poor sportsmanship. I saw it when I attended the school years ago and the few times I have been back I see it is worse than ever.

Now when approached about relocation checks for any business I say I will not consider Utah for any reason and if they are interested in that area I put them in touch with competitors who will consider Utah. Too many Mormons and too much 'Mormon Attitude' for me to deal with there. And I cam active LDS, living where Mormons are nice people, well away from Utah.

I grew up in California, disdaining Utah Mormons (not too seriously -- more in jest -- but still just a little bit).

I currently live in Utah. I don't think Utah Mormons are particularly uncivil or unpleasant.

I agree. But, there is definitely an ingroup/outgroup dynamic that takes some getting used to.

Years ago in college, my Mormon friends explained to me that they reason they shouted the N word at the players on the opposing team, was to rattle them so they would miss their shots.


I thought perhaps they had given that practice up a long time ago.
