So... these women (and their male co-conspirators) were simply climbing the eternal social ladder. Well, there's an intereting idea to add to the mix.

That, and Joseph Smith was just an amazing, charismatic, enigmatic and powerful soul. I still can't wait to meet him.

You'll have to go to hell to do it.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

Seriously though, I am a temple-married LDS, married AND faithful to DH for 25 years, 8 children. Many of my posts on my blog are tongue-in-cheek and designed to make people think. If you read me a lot, you will get to know that about me. Much of the appeal of Joseph Smith, in my opinion, did stem from the belief that he was the Prophet of God, and celestial marriage to him was the path to receipt of the highest eternal reward for self, family, and posterity. And if all you ended up with is the wet spot, what would you think then?
God has the right to create and to destroy, to make like and to kill. He can delegate this authority if he wishes to. I know that can be scary. Deal with it.

"and Joseph Smith was just an amazing, charismatic, enigmatic and powerful soul."

Followers said the same thing about Charlie Manson, Jim Jones and so many others.

The fact that so many are so willing to 'screw for salvation' says more about them than they may realize.

There are a lot of reasons women attach themselves to wealthy and powerful men who may not be decent, honest, or loving; secondary power, status, resources, prestige, eternal rewards, lack of self-esteem, being "saved", wanting to be "rescued", to name a few.

And there are a few reasons girls are attached to wealthy and powerful men; father's sell them, they are taken by force, bought, manipulated, coerced, pressured, and/or threatened.

Those women who attached themselves (and those girls who were given/sold), to Joseph Smith were no different than all the other girls and women who end up with less than decent powerful and wealthy men.

I still can't figure out what the point of the Blog post was in the first place.

If the post were about Thomas Jefferson, or Charles Darwin, or Henry VIII, or Charles Tayes Russell, I think we would all recognize it as a little weird, bordering on disturbing.

If a guy blogged about why he would sleep with Eliza Snow ("she was a great poet, and had fantastic breasts, and I love breasts and poetry"), or Emma Smith (she was a take-charge kind of woman who knew what she wanted, and I really like that...) we would probably consider him slightly odd, and maybe disturbed.

But what does it say about Joseph Smith that a woman in 2008 could even write something like that? There are certainly "Joseph Smiths" in our day, so maybe I shouldn't be surprised that there would be Zina Huntington's in our day as well(?).

Joseph was a playa. That's what it means in 2009.

ps: and in the 1840s, how many women felt to sing out "vamos a la playa"?
pps: yes, I know what it means in spanish, just making a joke, come on...
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen
