I just cannot understand guys like him or Orson Scott Card who writes one the best Sci-Fi, can so gullibly buy a below average badly concocted, disjointed story of Joseph smith.
These People are not stupid and definitely they are not gullible.

Tradition. If it never occurs to an individual to question what is traditional in their upbringing, they aren't going to step too far from those traditions as they age.
Trust. When an individual trusts someone to never lead them astray, they won't know if they're on the road to hell or not.
Fear. When your leaders tell you over and over again that questioning leads to a loss of salvation, most people don't question.
