Stunning, sobering truths. Yes, you will be stunned.

Post by _cinepro »

In a recent ad for Sheri Dew's new book, "Saying it Like it Is", Deseret claims we will find truths inside. But not just your normal, everyday truths. No, Sheri has written truths that are both "stunning" and "sobering". She is "unflinching" as well.

Thankfully, the ad includes examples of some of these truths, so I didn't have to spend my $16.16 to be stunned and sobered.

Such as:

“When we come to understand not only who we are but who we have always been— and therefore who we may become— the choice between following Christ or embracing the world is really no choice at all.”

“The only way to be happy is to live the gospel. It is not possible to sin enough to be happy.”

“We are here to influence the world rather than to be influenced by the world. If we could unleash the full influence of covenant- keeping women, the kingdom of God would change overnight.”

(Note: I'm not commenting on whether or not those claims are actually "true" or not. I am only debating whether anyone finds them stunning, sobering, or flinch-worthy.)

Right... no one except the LDS folk living the LDS version of truth are happy.

“We are here to influence the world rather than to be influenced by the world. If we could unleash the full influence of covenant- keeping women, the kingdom of God would change overnight.”

What in the world does this even mean?

Is she claiming that if the women of the world "unleashed" their influence the church would change or the world would change or what? What is the "kingdom of God" to which she refers? And how exactly might it change due to LDS women? And how are LDS women supposed to "unleash" their influence?

Hmmm...

Yes, I am flinching. LOL!

Sheri Dew wrote:“The only way to be happy is to live the gospel. It is not possible to sin enough to be happy.”

Sin = unauthorized happiness.

“We are here to influence the world rather than to be influenced by the world. If we could unleash the full influence of covenant- keeping women, the kingdom of God would change overnight.”

The last time the full influence of covenant-keeping women was unleashed, the ERA was overthrown. It wasn't the kingdom of God that changed.

(I am only debating whether anyone finds them stunning, sobering, or flinch-worthy.)

Oh, how could I not?

What a wakeup call. I think the tagline should have been something like "Dew distills truth from heaven."

My favorite recent Deseret Book title is Alonzo Gaskill's Odds Are, You're Going to Be Exalted. Really?

That's a book for kids under the age of 8 with terminal illnesses.

From an excerpt:

The Lord didn’t declare, “Thou shalt not steal—unless you’re in a real bind.” He said, “Thou shalt not,” clearly delineating the lines we are not to cross—lines that represent breaches in integrity or morality or virtue so serious that they drive the Spirit away and lead ultimately to the destruction of our souls.

"Thou shalt not commit adultery", unless an angel of God with a drawn sword authorises you to do so.

Especially since they have to get approval from their Priesthood leaders first...

I guess Sister Dew is saying that LDS women are "leashed"?

Wow.....

You'd almost think you people are surprised that an ad might be overblown and excessive? Do you people not watch commercials? Read magazines?

While that may be the norm for advertising, I think we need to be open to the possibility that in this case it was Sister Dew who was overblown and excessive, and not the ad writer.
