LDS Arts gets a royal smackdown...from UVU?

Post by _cinepro »

From the student newspaper at UVU:

At a recent trip to Deseret Book, I refilled my canteen of simmering anger over the idea that the creators of such atrocities are not only lauded and compensated for their work, but are actually encouraged to continue polluting human culture.

First of all, the most important thing to remember about smarmy Mormon art is that each and every piece -- every single asininely banal, faux-spiritual representation -- was designed by the artist to be the centerpiece of your living room. Think about THAT for a second.

If we continue to tolerate this hokey crap it's only a matter of time before walls across Utah are decked with garish depictions of a giggling Christ in a Hawaiian shirt jumping rope with a bunch of white kids (and a token sprinkling of black and brown children) while giving the viewer a big cheesy thumbs up.

Wow. I've had my complaints about LDS-themed art...but wow.

I agree. Obviously the crap art described in the OP is what TBMs want in their living rooms. Let the market decide.

CFR that the author of the article is suggesting somehow limiting the free market.

And are you making the argument that the "value" (or quality?) of art is indicated somehow by the "free market". How would the "free market" indicate it? By popularity and sales success?

If that were the case, would we assume that the best movie of last year was the one that sold the most tickets, or the best book was the one that sold the most copies?

I've got to go. It's Tuesday, and I need to make sure I make it home in time to see the greatest TV show of all time, as determined by the Free Market.

If the free market determines greatness, wouldn't that make Mormonism one of the crappiest religions in the world?

Im starting an online campaign to make the Riddler a Mormon in the next Dark Knight movie.

That should help with the numbers.

I am collecting all of these. They make me smile.

No Hawaiian shirts, however.
