That is not entirely so, Runtu.

Would you care to enlighten me in my error? My understanding is that he's planning to go to college at some point.
And for the record, I like Loran. I can't help myself. Yes, he sometimes says things that make my jaw drop, but I do think his heart is in the right place.

Yes, I would care to enlighten you, Runtu, but Loran's private information belongs to him unless and until he chooses to share it with others in this community and given the reception he gets from folks around here (not that he doesn't play a part in provoking it) I can't imagine why he would want to do that. That your statement wasn't entirely accurate is all I wanted to submit. Loran and I had many run-in's over on Z and also here. However, I did make an effort to learn about him as a human being and feel certain that I did so.
I do want to tell you what my reaction was to your post regarding self-education. I see no reason to criticize those who are self-eductated. That they aren't following a course syllabus to guide their self study doesn't negate their search for knowledge or invalidate the knowledge that they gain. I know mulitudes of students in college level courses who fail to apply themselves to their studies and in doing so fail to gain the full benefit of their education. A degree is not a guarantee of intellectual superiority.
My own mother graduated high school the same year that I did. I can't think of a single person, knowing the circumstances of her life, who would criticize a woman in her late 40's for graduating high school the same year as her 18 year old daughter. Quite the contrary, family and friends celebrated the attaining of her (near) life long goal. When she was supposed to be finishing high school, she was struck with an illness that incapcitated her for a year and then entered the work force during the war. She "self educated" enough to earn a living every day of her life until she retired, building skill in her trade and eventually earning a living at building among the first "room size" computers that led to the development of the computer that you and I are typing these posts out on today.
Please don't diss the self educated where I can see it, Runtu.
The point that I'm ultimately trying to make, Runtu, that is unless you know or understand the circumstances of another's life path, criticizing them for their lack of academic pursuit makes YOU look narrow minded and I doubt that Loran's narrow mindedness can be pinned solely on self education.
This board loses something unique without him here.

I'm not criticizing the self-educated, Jersey Girl. What I am saying is that one of the dangers of self-education is the tendency not to study anything that challenges one's beliefs and biases. Thus, rather than give a reasoned response to poststructuralism, we get a tirade about how Derrida, Barthes, and Foucault were perverts and Nazis. That's what I've seen countless times with Loran. And that is the result of the combination of self-education and a narrow viewpoint. Like him or not, Loran has clearly studied with a right-wing slant. I hope he does get a formal education because he might actually have to read things he disagrees with.
In short, Loran's narrowmindedness isn't a result of self-education, but the poor quality of Loran's self-education is a result of his narrowmindedness.

Yes, Runtu. You had no right to make an assumption about Loran. And, you have no right to any personal information about Loran other than what Jersey Girl chooses to share with you without Loran's consent. Don't get caught up in the irony of Jersery Girl sharing personal information about Loran and then lecturing you on privacy. That does no one any good.

Absolutely true Runtu. There are self-educated people who make my head spin. For instance, Brent M. comes to mind. Loran's severe "issues", whatever they are, sealed his failure as a self-educated person. You are all too kind to him by limiting his failure to understand things like "continental philosophy". What's worse, far more pitiful, is that he doesn't understand his own side. His arrogant, entirely agenda-driven pursuit of "knowledge" basically has led him to memorize a list of what could be called proof-texts for right-wing ideology without really understanding the underlying material on a basic level.
There is no reason to feel bad about exposing Droopy's failure as an "intellectual" because not only has he failed, not only has he failed with supreme arrogance, but he has failed while putting down just about everyone on the forum, calling them names, and attacking female posters with sexually abusive language.
Lou Midgley 08/20/2020: "...meat wad," and "cockroach" are pithy descriptions of human beings used by gemli? They were not fashioned by Professor Peterson.
LM 11/23/2018: one can explain away the soul of human beings...as...a Meat Unit, to use Professor Peterson's clever derogatory description of gemli's ideology.

I wasn't referring to his use of "lugubrious" specifically. I was just talking about his writing in general.
I think ya'll are being a little kind on Droopy as far as his education is concerned. Most of that is just a put on. Most of the things he's "studied" he hasn't actually studied in any meaningful sense at all. Really, he just regurgitates material from inane religious right sources with a great deal of condescension and questionably written highfalutin language. As Gad said, his "knowledge" mainly consists of buzzwords and talking points he superficially understands. He has a really shoddy grasp of what he's talking about and how he's talking about it, but he doesn't know enough to know how poorly that comes off. If his entire persona is not built around trolling, and there's still some possibility in my mind that it is, then he's no different than a troll in effect.
