Egypt wants all their antiques back
I wonder how long until the LDS church gets a letter.

It won't matter to the church. Getting rid of the papyrus would be a good thing. Then eventually everyone will forget that Joseph was just making it all up as he went along. They can concoct whatever story will fly at the time, and the children now will never know any different.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

Church wont give them it up..
They don't want anybody to look at it..
God has the right to create and to destroy, to make like and to kill. He can delegate this authority if he wishes to. I know that can be scary. Deal with it.

They don't really have a leg to stand on. The mummies and papyrus the church got were not smuggled out of the country. They could ask for the fragments back but I don't think they consider them to be of much consequence. They could try to apply pressure to the Church....but what are they going to do? Kick out the Missionaries?

I agree. Nobody thinks much of the fragments anymore. Once Joseph Smith removed pieces of the scroll, glued them to cardboard in his own arrangement, and added his own illustrations to them, creating a mash-up of Egyptolgy and Joseph Smithology, he destroyed any value they might have had.

I agree, he planned well.

Honestly, what difference would it make if the Church gave up the papyrus? After the initial batch of articles in the Improvement Era, has there been a single mention of them in any Church publication since? You'd think there'd be a slightly bigger deal made over the Church's possession of the only existing source documents for latter day scripture.
[Edit to add: latter day scripture from an ancient source. Obviously, we have many "source documents" for the D&C and JSH.]

Which says that the church knows exactly what they are... and what they are not.

I think we make as big a deal over them as we do the sources and aids for other scriptures. The gold plates aren't mentioned much; neither are the seerstones or the Urim and Thummim. The emphasis always has been on studying the scripture itself, not where it comes from.

you must not have attended the same primary, seminary, priesthood, sunday school, and Gospel doctrine classes that I did. The gold plates and urim and thummim are mentioned A LOT. The seerstone and papyrus are rarely, if ever, talked about. Interestingly, the seesrstone and papyrus are in the church's possession, while the U&T and gold plates are not. I see a correlation here.
