Many forms of chrsitianity are essentially atheist, especially the liberal. The US is essentially ruled by atheists who masquarade by going to a politically acceptable church. China and Europe are ruled by atheists. The UN is run by an atheist beauracracy (including graduates from the law and social sciences programs at BYU) In fact, I don't think there are very many national leaders in the world today who genuinely practice or believe in their stated religion.

But seriously, if someone believes in God then he isn't an atheist. Most of these people say they believe in God, and are therefore definitively theists, even if they don't measure up to your high standards. Why don't they come out and admit they don't believe in God? Are people demanding hypocrites as leaders? Or are the people sincere but just not as good as you at seeing through the grand charade?

I think people demand that our leaders at least pay lip service to belief in God because when things go wrong, and they will go wrong, it helps if people think our leaders have a hotline to someone who might actually be able to do something about making us feel better. Even if He can't or won't. An atheist doesn't have that hotline, makes fun of the hotline even. So the people do the only thing left to them... they don't vote for atheists.

Maybe if y'all were a little more friendly towards people who don't think like you and a little less arrogant about how you're so smart and we're all so stupid, you'd get a few more votes. Just a suggestion.

It's not the arrogance alone, Schmo, not the I'm so smart part that sticks on people's craw. It's the last part... whenever an atheist meets up with a believer, ineviditably the "we're so smart because we don't believe in God, and you're so stupid because you do" attitude shows up. It's the "you're so stupid" part. It happens here, there, in the press, on the street, in the work place, in the line at the grocery store.

Insult people often enough, and guess what. They won't like you. And if they don't like you, they won't trust you, and if they don't trust you, they won't vote for you. Romney lost because of the middle; an atheist loses because of beginning.

Even if the generalization you’re pushing was legitimate (and I’m not saying it isn’t… at least, not entirely) any arrogance is an afterthought. There are all kinds of bigotry and misconceptions surrounding atheists that arrogance becomes practically irrelevant. It’s the “not believing in god” that sticks in people craw.

The fact is, most politicians would never even admit to being an atheist in the first place because they know it’s a nonstarter out of the gate, so there’s no way to support your claim one way or the other.

It’s been my experience that arrogance is waaaay down the list of problems associated with atheists. Perhaps you should watch the video I linked again to hear what people think of atheists.

So you've got it all figure out, huh? See, I'm still trying to figure it out. I thought it was bigotry and arrogance of theists that causes them to only elect other theists. But clearly theists are smarter, and that's why. Thank you for your help today, harmony. I have come away enlightened.
