What is an acceptable overriding public interest?
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

Incest. Not because it's icky, but because of genetic defects. Never mind the fact that we allow people with known genetic defects to marry. We forbid incest because of genetic defects. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Oh, and never mind the fact that we don't usually punish people who engage in consensual incest.

So... the church may have something to worry about after all.

I'm not certain that bans against incestual marriage are justifiable, either.

An acceptable public interest would be something like, discriminating between felons and non-felons in police department hiring.

You can convert an smac97 post into PDF form and put "Princeton" at the top, but that doesn't make it any more persuasive.

The report has two salient features -- it is very lengthy and talks much more than about gay marriage.

First, it says that gay marriage is generally suboptimal for children because of the observed high incidence of turnover in partners. (The report doesn't address gay marriages which don't have children.)

On this point, it concedes that better studies could be made of this. The response to this point is usually anecodotal -- "well, I know so-and-so and he's been with his partner for 30 years" and the like.

It states other reasons.

Second, the report was signed by over 40 persons each of significant status. Its veracity in debate on the subject is based in large part upon the reputations of those who endorsed it. For instance, it was signed by the then current chair of Harvard Law School's Judge Learned Hand Chair.

What is a smac97?

Yours is the typical response, by the way -- a hand wave and off it goes. But I'd be very intersted in sociological studies which refute its conclusions.
