Predictably, the conversation has turned to a discussion of how we "shortsighted" critics (in particular me and John Larsen) see conspiracies and nefarious motives behind everything (apparently we're just this side of the tinfoil hat brigade). I swear, you can't even state the obvious (in this case, the church has misrepresented the disbanding of the Relief Society more than once) without having your character called into question.

It's a good thing I don't care what those folks think of me anymore. :)

I love how the first responses to Runtu's post try to cast doubt on the sources. They ask if John Taylor's quote is being taken out of context or is misquoted. They don't trust Mormon Enigma:
clairc829 wrote:Do you have any historical quotes on this other than "Mormon enigma's" for the other side? Sorry but I don"t have much faith in their being unbiased, any more than you do for Sis Dew.

and
clairc829 wrote:Are you sure the quote is accurate and in context?

They wonder about the editors of the Ensign. Maybe Sheri Dew didn't mean what was printed:
ttribe wrote:Bad editing couldn't be to blame?

They wonder if Sheri Dew's quote could have been about a different time period other than the time of the suspension:
blubell wrote:Dew says that it was 'after the martydom that the Relief Society was suspended', which would have been after 1847. You are talking about a suspension in 1844, right?

They attribute evil motives to the critics rather than addressing the issue, as if they are making compelling arguments:
ttribe wrote:Although Larsen's piling on does seem to add validity to my statement.

Scott26.2 wrote:I think it is a stretch to come to this conclusion, nothwithstanding your excellent quote mining skills. Our so-called critics like you and John Larsen and others only find the evil, dark, sinister explanations in these history wrap-ups.

The Nehor and Wade jump into the fray, babbling their requisite incoherencies. This thread is a great illustration of why I can't stand posting on MADB. Good luck to John W., John Larsen, Nevo, doubleagent, and Frij. You are much more tolerant than I.

ttribe: "Oh, you're mocking my religion! Waaaaah!"

Yes, idiot. That's what you're supposed to do to silly beliefs. When the Scientologists tell you about Xenu and volcanoes, do you sit there and nod respectfully?

Interesting research that Runtu has presented. From this I am wondering if there was a similar event that changed getting a little nookie on the side into becoming the Doctrine of Polygamy?
