What makes you think we haven't? (well, not about the KEP... good grief... but about the closed books and the stupid business decisions thinly disguised as revelation and the lack of anything resembling relevance?)
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

I know, I know, it’s pretty bad. But I’m willing to forgive all if they will simply address the KEP and start fresh. And I expect good answers too.

This is getting out of hand as I am starting to breathe heavily and the thread is being derailed. It’s your fault, a typical beautiful women trying to seduce a very nice looking man. We might have to take this down to the telestial world where I can properly express my passions!!!

Though there are some interesting accounts which suggest that rumors regarding the identity of the mummies as biblical figures circulated among the Saints:

"The prophet Joe has ascertained, by examining the papyrus through his spectacles, that they are the bodies of Joseph, (the son of Abraham,) and king Abimelch and his daughter." The Cleveland Whig, July 3, 1835

In addition, I find the argument that the prepositional phrase "by his own hand," does not refer to Abraham's personal penmanship highly problematic.

This has no doubt been pointed out before, however, in my mind, the statement Joseph dictated to Willard Richards for the March 1, 1842 edition of the Times and Seasons completely negates any argument against the notion that Joseph did not believe that Abraham literally wrote the scroll in his possession:

"In the present no. will be found the commencement of the Records discovered in Egypt some time since as penned by the hand of Father Abraham" (emphasis added).

And lest there exist any confusion on the matter, Webster's 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language defines the verb used by Joseph as "to write; to compose and commit to paper."

Hence, Joseph clearly believed that the scroll used to produce the Book of Abraham had been penned, i.e. "composed and committed to paper" by the Patriarch himself.

Well, this would be at least the third set of identities attributed to the mummies I have read: 1) Pharaoh Necho, 2) Pharaoh Onitus, and now 3) Joseph, king Abimelech, and his daughter.

Is this the result of shifting explanations, inaccurate reporting, or what? Was Joseph unable to settle on an identity for them? Is one of the options actually the one settled on in the end?

And not only is the identity of the mummies changing, but also the texts. As I have mentioned before, we see a text penned by Abraham, one by Joseph, one by Moses, a bit by Aaron, etc. Why, this would have been a veritable trove of ancient Jewish scripture! One begins to wonder whether it was thought to be the equivalent of the Brass Plates. The emphases on Joseph and Egypt are suggestive.
