Chapter 3
The Insult

On January 8 of 2009, Dr. Peterson posted a "call for papers", advertising the upcoming SMPT conference. The link to this thread can be found in chapter two. Within the first hour of his thread's lifetime, only a couple brief comments were made, one by Cinepro, and a couple by California Kid, who showed a great deal of interest. Possibly, due to the lack of any "attacks" on apologetics, Doctor Peterson became frustrated, and opted to reveal his true interest in posting the thread,

I'm hoping, personally, for papers from collegeterrace/PP, Some Schmo, solomarineris, poor antishock8, and/or TAK.

I think this board deserves the kind of strong representation that they can provide.

Out of nowhere comes the sarcasm and hostility, or rather, the magnificent "sense of humor" the apologists speak of fondly. Much like the scene from Titanic where Cal invites Jack to a nice dinner in order to ridicule his lack of culture and education, DCP expresses phony interest in having people from this forum that he thinks are stupid submit papers to an organization far enough above them intellectually, that they'd look like fools even trying. Note that, none of these critics had posted a single word in this thread. It was as if DCP hadn't got the negative response that he was looking for, so he would up the ante. I wonder what Jersey Girl, Liz, and the "DCP is a victim" promoters think of this? Was there any reason at all for DCP to hurl out an insult at people who hadn't even participated or possibly even seen the thread? Moreover, was it fair to the SMPT for DCP to use their organization as a tool to settle a personal score?

It was only after this hit below the belt that Solaromis and then Doctor Scratch responded with any digs at Mopologetics. To Doctor Scratch's satirical proposal on the underhandedness of the apologists, DCP inflates the hostile rhetoric exponentially,

If you're nervous about proposing your paper to a group of academics focused on philosophy and theology -- which is probably appropriate, since your sketchy "proposal" seems to deal, rather, primarily in history, psychology, or, even just malicious gossip -- you might still consider the annual Sunstone symposium as a venue. Although it would be a longer drive for you, its standards are lower and, on the whole, its audience would be much more interested in and sympathetic toward your accusations. And I wouldn't be there to reply.

Whoah! Liz and Jersey Girl, how called for was that attack on Sunstone? Doctor Scratch isn't even remotely connected to Sunstone. There was no reason for him to cut down Sunstone like this. Don Bradley and others whom many of the apologists respect for their etiquette present at Sunstone. And again, the "Invite the rube to dinner in First Class to embarrass him" motiff gains traction here. The quality of the SMPT is exaggerrated, and the education of the critics the butt of a joke.

Doctor Scratch and Doctor Peterson debated for a while. Joey thew in his 2 cents. Droopy, the self-annointed philosopher king, stopped by to throw a few punches. And, now, two days after the thread began, I made my first post. I asked Droopy if he'd be submitting a paper. My intent wasn't pure, no doubt, I was interested in whether Droopy in all his bragging about having studied philosophy for 20 or 30 years while putting down critics for being philosophically unserious would have the interest in joinging his peers in First Class. To that, Dr. Peterson inquired as to whether I'd be submitting a paper.

I replied,

Well, I don't know. I kind of feel like the invitation has been extended here in the spirit of, "Ha ha ha, let's see you guys try to get into 'the society'".

Given DCP's uncalled for invitation/attack on some of the posters at MDB, and given his highbrow dismissal of Dr. Scratch and insults of Sunstone, it seemed quite obvious that the real point of DCP's invitation was to invite the rubes to dinner in First Class, so to speak, believing they'd be way out of their depth and embarrassed in the presence of the formidable academics affiliated with the SMPT.

I must confess, that while I am drawing allusions to the scene from Titanic here, that this scene had not yet flashed in my mind. I tell you that because, if I did it, since you all want to know very badly whether you admit it or not why and how I did it, you should know at what point the various thoughts I had came to be within my brain.

I think we can conclude based on this explanation that there were definitely mitigating circumstances "if you did it." Clearly there is a Mopologetic obsession with people they deem to be "intellectual rubes." SHIELDS has archives full of their interactions with these types. Whether you did it or not, you have helped us understand why one would do such a thing, and surely that constitutes a watershed moment in the history of Mopologetic Studies.

Yes, this seems an iron-clad case. And, it would go a long ways towards explaining LoaP's hyperventilating over this issue. I don't think there is another amateur apologist out there who is more desperate to "sit in First Class" as LoaP. But, we need to remember that LoaP had to shell out for his own ticket, while DCP's trip was probably comped by FARMS or BYU. In other words: LoaP had to pay out some $$$ in order to feel like he was in First Class, but, of course, he knows deep down that he isn't actually in First Class, so it makes sense that he'd be edgy.

Thank you Reverand. It is indeed humbling that a man of your spiritual learning would take the time to understand the burden I carry. And it means all the more to know that you have taught ethics on a college level.

The honor is all mine, Dean Robbers. Ahhh, a trip down memory lane. That was very generous of you to give me the opportunity to teach the ethics of Mopologetics at Cassius University. It was so exhilarating to help young Mormons grapple with the complex issues of Mopologetics. To see them enter with the deep conviction that everything about Mopologetics is justified because of the divine truth of Mormonism and the evil of its critics. But then they did their homework and saw with their own eyes the antics captured on SHIELDS, FAIR, and MAD, and slowly their eyes were opened. More young lives transformed and protected.

I am sorry you are feel the force of such a heavy burden weighing down on you, Gad. The histrionics that have taken hold of so many here over the possibility that you "did it." I wonder if these folks showed up at the polls in November ready to cast their vote for Stephen Colbert, only to be dismayed and enraged to find his name missing. They surely would have been angry that Colbert ran a presidential campaign and yet was not on the ballot. Are they stalking Mr. Colbert? Are they sending him hate mail for letting them down?

I think we all know the answer to these questions. Moreover, I suspect the outrage toward you is, for some people, a kind of playacting. Looking for a way to turn the tables on the faculty of Cassius, a pretended outrage would actually be a brilliant scheme.

DCP knows only too well, SMPT's history started with Joseph Smith, before him there was no Book of Mormon, Book of Abraham, Kolob, etc...
Read their (SMPT's) creed;
"The purpose of the Society is to promote disciplined reflection on Latter-day Saint beliefs. Its aims include constructive engagement with the broader tradition of philosophy and theology. All its publications, conferences, and other forums for discussion will take seriously both the commitments of faith and the standards of scholarship."

This is a joke, disciplined reflection on Latter-day Saint beliefs?, My gosh, didn't GBH utterly slaughter Mormon doctrines interview after interview with his senile mumblings? Go ahead and deny it, it is all publicized to death.

If you, DCP, only knew how detached you guys are from reality.
The value of SMPT is 90% hilarious entertainment 10% scholarship.

Oh, there is some truth to this my dear friend and colleague. Just wait until you get to chapter 5.

Frankly not much but based on the themes of this year SMPT will pursue LDS' revisionist agenda.
Let's take a look what you guys are gonna blabber 'bout;

The Holy Spirit’s work in differing spiritual traditions
This one is too vague to comment about
Cooperation between religious groups
This one is going to be a winner, I am sure you guys will make grand strides to demolish the Myth
how Joseph Smith & Cronies proclaimed "The only True Church" while putting mercilessly down
other faiths, especially Catholic Church.
Interreligious dialogue
This one also looks like a sure winner, not only you guys made grand strides in this butt-kissing area
as well as other faiths learned to tolerate you.
The place of pluralism within the church
Pluralism? Pluralism? I told you this gig was highly entertaining, hilarious.
I'll let you guys' imagination run wild on this subject.
Missionary work and respect for other faiths
Ahh, another favored subject of mine, discussing about sending these young bubes, who can barely separate B from A.
Pure, unadulterated embarrassment for kids and humankind.
Differences in teaching and/or practice within or among distinct historical dispensations (e.g. Adamic, Abrahamic, Mosaic, Lehitic)
I was wondering about when you guys were going to discuss pure fiction aspect of the meeting. Ought to be a no-miss session.
The relationship of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to other Christian counterparts
If LDS church made any strides along this line, some speakers should make sure to speak about beloved GBH's media interviews, he made
huge leap of faith publicly denouncing core LDS doctrines, just to suck up to his Christian Denominations.
Comparative theology
Well, this fictional subject is not unique to LDS faith, I mean you guys have your Kolob stories Christian brothers have their own Tower of Babel
stories, they both entertain.
Implications of continuing revelation for religious pluralism
Well, I don't know what one can talk about this subject, since there is next to nothing to declare from Prophet's mouth.
The role of religion in public life
This is a good one to discuss among yourselves, how to demolish freedoms of same sex marriage, Abortion, censorship, woman's rights.

A heartfelt Good Luck from me, DCP.
I look forward to reading your impressions of the gathering.
