I don't understand this approach.I've heard Van Hale make this same claim and it undermines the whole concept of true religion.
If the scriptures are just "faith promoting stories" as you claim then they are useless. Scripture is the spirit of prophecy in its recorded form. It is a true account of a mans dealings with God, given to us to use an an example to follow, so that we as well can communicate with our creator.
If the scriptures are not true history, then there is no God.
