Rollo,
through the years I followed your posts on here, RFM because you are very good about informing people.
But this one is not one of them. How can you presume one man's action define or reflect negatively upon LDS Church?
Most of us are parents here, if one of the kids rapes or kills, should that action define us as bad parents?
I don't think so.
If anything Church is probably over-sensitive about educating it's people about the procedures.

That's terrible for the girl. I can't imagine how she came to find herself in that situation, and it's too bad she didn't go to the authorities sooner. There's obviously a lot more to the story. It was also my impression that all CES teachers had to be married, so it's a terrible situation for his wife and kids as well.

It would only reflect poorly on the Church if CES personnel somehow knew about the situation and ignored it or excused it. I seriously doubt that would be the case.

In a Civil Court the church will bare some of the responsibility as this church leader abused his position. Of course the church will assume its normal position and roll over like a stuck pig and settle out of court. -With your tithing money!

I don't get it. How can you attack Rollo for a tactic commonly pursued here? Basically, every fifth post is a smear against the Church or some living person by pointing to the foibles of some particular individual.

Harmony and Scratch are the queen and king of smear anecdotes. Come on -- they're entertaining! More, more more, how do you like it, how do you like it? More, more more.

These anecdotes are only interesting as long as the Church claims to be a superhuman organization. If the Church admitted that it is merely man-made, and run by imperfect men (who, say, don't know the moral status of homosexuality better than anyone else), then there wouldn't be any reason to remind the lemmings who follow it of its fallibility. The Church's problems here are largely of its own making.

Since it's allegations about sexual abuse, it'd be un-american to assume he's innocent until proven guilty. [/sarcasm]

The allegations are serious and deserves serious investigation. I hope that the truth will be discovered and necessary actions will be taken to further protect children (and adults) from this situation and ones similar to it. No organization is immune from predators, and not everyone who is accused is in fact guilty. Everyone needs protection from this sort of thing, LDS or not.

Ok, I've read and reread Rollo's post. I am obviously missing something. Can you please point out to me where he implies that this one man's action defines the LDS Church?

Whether it reflects poor on the LDS Church, I don't see that he is necessarily suggesting this either. It does, however, reflect negatively on the LDS Church's claim of beyond-the-ordinary spiritual discernment that it likes to tout so much.

I cannot help wonder whether the local CES bureaucrat prayed for confirmation before hiring this guy.
