Re: Your Views on Contemporary Culture
Contemporary culture in my town involves horses and rope... and the occasional John Deere tractor.
We do, however, in the nearby metro area where I work, have a symphony, a theater troupe, assorted pastimes for the athletically inclined (10+ golf courses, softball and soccer complexes, plus assorted water sports) including professional sports (hockey, arena football, boat and car racing, and baseball), 1 college and 1 university, the highest concentration of PhD's per capita in the country, and assorted community events including one of the coolest antique car shows in the country.
We do okay, even with the current economic situation (tickets are already sold out for the fair concerts and the new Harry Potter movie premier sold out as soon as the ticket window opened).

I think it's a musical group of a genre that I immediately switch channels from, should I inadvertantly come across them. I'm not much for sound that grates on my eardrums. I could be wrong, though. They may be the next Brooks and Dunn.

Oh man. Oh, this is really embarrassing. Oh, how awful.
You've just failed the Scratch Culture Test.
How mortifying. And in public, too.
I'll bet you're not fully au courant with most of the titans on this list, either:

I failed in public? Hey, like I really give, Daniel. ;-)
Okay, so I know some of those on the linked list however, I noticed that "Kung Fu Fighting" is suspiciously absent from the list and that HAD to be a one hit wonder. I am therefore skeptical of your online source.
So, "Bat for Lashes" is like some sequel to "Bat out of Hell" by Meatloaf, right?

Re: Your Views on Contemporary Culture
I'm a fan of the recent Death Cab EP, and am enjoying the latest release from The Decemberists. I got the LP for my wife for her birthday, it's a 4-record set and sounds great. I surprisingly enjoyed Ben Kweller's latest album, a strange country twist. And I was one of the lucky recipients of the accidentally-pressed gold Eels record, but I was disappointed that it didn't include the digital downloads. Further disappointment: The Weakerthans once again bypass Utah, or any other nearby state, on their upcoming tour. Dang Canadians.

Re: Your Views on Contemporary Culture
I'm pretty finicky about what I do and don't like, but I like some pretty mainstream stuff nonetheless. My favorite bands are:
-Radiohead. Kid A = perfection. OK Computer and In Rainbows are very good as well.
-Talking Heads. Naked is my favorite, but I love everything except for some stuff on True Stories.
-Boston. Duh.
-Pink Floyd. I'm partial to Wish You Were Here -- my favorite guitar work of theirs -- but Dark Side of the Moon is obviously great, and I'm a defender of The Wall.
-Led Zeppelin. Again, duh.
Sigur Ros. ( ). Wow.
