The first time I heard this song was a remix of it (on Verve Remixed 2 -- awesome album). I had a lot of Ella albums at the time, but hardly any Billie albums. I didn't know what the song was about when I heard it that first time, but it illicited an uncomfortable sadness which only become more profound once I learned the meaning of the song.

Strange Fruit (Billie Holiday)

Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

Will,

Let's not stop with Breath on Me or Time. You know how we loved The bottom line song -- Led Zeppelin II, The Lemon Song. I'll never forget the first time I heard it. I was smoking weed with Warren, my buddy!

The Lemon Song

I should have quit you, long time ago.
I wouldn't be here, my children, down on this killin' floor.

I should have listened, baby, to my second mind
Everytime I go away and leave you, darling, you send me the blues way down the line.

Said, people worry I can't keep you satisfied.
Let me tell you baby, you ain't nothin but a two-bit, no-good jive.

Went to sleep last night, worked as hard as I can,
Bring home my money, you take my money, give it to another man.

I should have quit you, baby, such a long time ago.
I wouldn't be here with all my troubles, down on this killing floor.

Squeeze me baby, till the juice runs down my leg.
The way you squeeze my lemon, I'm gonna fall right out of bed.

I'm gonna leave my children down on this killing floor.

Everyone here knows I'm a musical theater nerd, so my pick here really should be no huge surprise.

"Send in the Clowns" has been a favorite song of mine since High School, but it has gained more significance as I have gained more life experience.

Here is a link. You'll have to put up with my singing:

http://web.me.com/escottmusicstudio/Sco ... lowns.html

Here are the words:

Send in the Clowns by Stephen Sondheim

Isn't it rich?
Are we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground,
You in mid-air.
Send in the clowns.

Isn't it bliss?
Don't you approve
One who keeps tearing around-
One who can't move.
Where are the clowns?
Send in the clowns.

Once when I stopped
Opening doors.
Finally knowing the one that I wanted
Was yours.
Making my entrance again
With my usual flair.
Sure of my lines-
No one is there--

Don't you love farce?
My fault, I fear.
I thought that you'd want what I want.
Sorry--
My dear.
And where are the clowns?
Send in the clowns.
Don't bother--they're here.

Isn't it rich?
Isn't it queer?
Losing my timing this late in my career?
And--
Where are the clowns?
There ought to be clowns--
Well, maybe...next year.

I enjoyed your voice very much on this ... I'm not sure how I got it to play, I goofed around a bit at the link and it finally played, but I can not get others (or it) to play again?

edit:

works fine here at work ... must be my new build on win7 at home that has issues?

Great job, liz. Your theatrical background is easy to discern from this clip.

Come on Will, what do you think of the Lemon Song? Sqeeze your lemon, boy!

Do you like Whole Lotta Love? Do you stroke every inch?

Confess your past/forgiven sins, Will? Or, have you forgotten them?

Your silence is deafening.

This song is dedicated to my friend Will, who surely appreciates it:

Led Zeppelin
"Trampled Underfoot"

Greased and slicked down fine, groovy leather trim
I like the way you hold the road, mama, it ain't no sin

Talkin' 'bout love [X3]

Trouble-free transmission, helps your oil's flow
Mama, let me pump your gas, mama, let me do it all

Talkin' 'bout love [X3]

Dig that heavy metal underneath your hood
Baby, I could work all night, believe I've got the perfect tools

Talkin' 'bout love [X3]

A model built for comfort, really built with style
Specialist tradition, mama, let me feast my eyes

Talkin' 'bout love [X3]

Factory air-conditioned, heat begins to rise
Guaranteed to run for hours, mama it's a perfect size

Talkin' 'bout love [X3]

Groovin' on the freeway, gauge is on the red
Gun down on my gasoline, I believe I'm gonna crack a head.

Talkin' 'bout love [X3]
I can't stop talkin' about...

Come to me for service every hundred miles
Baby, let me check your points, fix your overdrive

Talkin' 'bout love [X3]

Fully automatic, comes in any size
Makes me wonder what I did, before we synchronized

Talkin' 'bout love [X3]

Feather-light suspension, coils couldn't hold
I'm so glad I took a look inside your showroom doors

Talkin' 'bout love [X3]

Oh, I can't stop talkin' about love.
