I'm currently reading the manuscript for Eric's eventual book. I've given him my opinion of this privately. I just want to say that I'm stunned at what I'm reading. A lot of people are going to be in for a big surprise when the book is out, including those who think they know a lot. Until then, my lips are sealed.

Don't miss this one when it comes out.

Different circumstances. Not related to the hypothetical scenario in this thread.

It's also an ethics question about hurting a man's public reputation by releasing unflattering information except in this case the man has not done you any harm.

Now certainly any two circumstances which appear to be similar on the surface could be very different underneath. However, from what was written, the core of the ethical question seems to be the same: should one resort to dirty tactics to smear an opponent (or potential opponent)? I thought that the question had already been answered as a "no" for a definate opponent and would therefore logically also be a "no" for someone who was only a potential opponent.

If Eric hates the "smear" tactics of LDS apologists, then he'd be a hypocrite if he did it too even if the dirt he airs is 100% factual (Quinn really is gay after all). I think he knows this, but he also feels a great temptation to do it anyhow. There is a certain appeal to hurting those who have hurt you (or who support those who hurt you).

I'll let Eric speak about this when he returns to post (if he chooses). I have my own opinion, and it's quite different to what you express above.
All I can say is, be prepared to be shocked (if you have a conscience) at what went on at the Gulag. Eric's published article only scratches the surface.

Trapped in a Mormon Gulag.

What makes you think that I might not have one?

All the rest of what I haven't heard aside, what Eric has said about the Gulag, if true, is bad enough and warrants that it be shut down as soon as possible and those who are guilty punished.

I say "if true" not because I think Eric has made me think he's untrustworthy but because I have have felt the effects of false accusations in the lives of someone very close to me. That is why I wish for a fair trial where the courts handle this.

in my opinion it won't get to the courts, not the particular scenario raised in this thread. As for Buttars and his institutional abuse - he should be hung by the balls.

The latter was what I was referring to when I said, "if true"--the whole gulag thing instead of just the particular scenario of this thread.

Judge for yourself after a thorough examination (and later reading the book).

Mormon Gulag.com.

I'm not a legal eagle, but I think this will be a slow process that could end up in the courts, at some levels. It wouldn't be the first time it has happened. Abuse cases can be prosecuted many years after they occurred, though I'm not sure what the statute of limitations is in Utah.

Hi Ray,

I'm glad to hear you are helping with this project. :-)

And, can't wait to read the book!

Due to what I know about the institution, and glimpsing some of the differences between West Ridge and other facilities regarding, protection and oversight, I am guessing that a lot more people are involved that we can imagine.

In other words, I don't think anyone could get away with what has gone on there for years without some higher ups involved.
