when all the "moral" chastisement of the Saints by their leaders began in earnest.
In the British Mission polygamy had been revealed -- causing a terrible drop-off
in converts. Same problem in Canada. The Scandinavian missions were not yet
supplying vast numbers of new members.
All the while, The Brethren were trying to justify their polygamy by talking about
the need to raise up a holy generation, etc. etc.
Trouble was -- polygamy did not increase the number of new births as quickly
as monogamy would have done. The pressure was on -- for "faithful" males to
produce as many new children as possible.
"Onanism" ran counter to the needs of the Church -- to supply "tabernacles of clay"
for all the righteous "spirit children" clamoring to be born as Mormons.
