Helix Aspersa (lots of them!) *update*

Post by _Jersey Girl »

My Helix had babies and lots of them! About 35 so far as I can count. Right now they are about the size of a tapioca. :-) Here is a link for those who are interested in keeping Helix indoors. They are low, low maintenance, interesting to observe, inexpensive to feed. All you need is a fish bowl or aquarium, soil, a spray bottle for misting them, some chalk or a cuttle bone and your left over salad for food! They are "other worldly" in appearance, can be handled and yes, they do move quicker than you think!

If you put salt on snails they will curl up and die. At least that is what I do to them in my garden. Die snails Die.

You've got to stay entertained somehow in all that snow. Do they leave that snail trail on the glass, Jersey Girl?

It is an ad. But it isn't Photoshop. It is quickened only.

As a child, we checked this with a little wooden plate fenced by
eight razor blade, using different snails.
Three of four have escaped unhurt.
(75% retention rate. I know people who would be happy with such RR.)

It has happened in the 50's. There were no cell phones with camera,
no youtube, no internet, no nothing.
Our teacher produced this in every year for the 3rd grades.
He propagated the evolution and no parents protested.
Time is going on. People can retrograde.

I raise them for science education. :-) Yes, they leave a whole lot of things on the glass! You can put them on construction paper and see the trails. They can be easily handled. When food is around they glide to it fast! You can feed them left over salad and fruit. You can see the food in their bodies when they eat. They are nature's composters!

I think I saw another one laying eggs today! Yikes!
