I don't mean a 'new order Mormon' sort of middle way. I am just saying that one does not need to be TBM to defend the lds chruch against claims that it is false. And one does not need to be a forming at the mouth exmormon either.
Paul O's vocabulary is coming right out of the exmormon.org handbook. Calling the GA's money grubbing is an example of this. The GAs are just like all Mormons: they believe and have faith that it is all true. They just happen to have the callings that they do. But are they money grubbing? No, I don't think so. But calling them so is certainly one way to dehumanize them all. And that is what one needs to do if one feels one at war or if one has even changed sides. But that doesn't mean that it is reality.

I agree that it's "good for the moment". I've said a lot of wonderful things about the GA's over the course of many years and now I see things in a different light. I think it only fair (and my God given right) to state my new position. Look, the GA's have money, position, power, and lots of perks. These guys worked themselves up to that position because of their social status, employment, faithfulness, financial well being, and above all they are YES MEN! It's not about being called of God. It's about being called by a body of men to join the club and maintain the order.

The GA's have money because they loved to earn it through their professions. That is a requirement to become a GA. Did they sell all that they had and give it to the poor? No, they did not. They enjoyed their fancy houses, owned businesses, and enjoyed financial security. Eat, drink, and be merry!
It's always about money. Somethings never change. The GA's are into their money and will hold on to it for dear life because they love money. That is the kind of men that make it to the top of Mormonism.
I am torn on this issue about Paul's rhetoric. I mean, I think it is legitimate to criticize people who avow certain beliefs and then do not live up to them, although, heck, most of us do it. On the other hand, a blanket statement that makes out the Mormon leadership to be nothing but a bunch of greedy old bastards is going way too far, imho. If they were only out for money, then presumably they would find more lucrative employ. I would instead suggest that they receive great satisfaction doing what they do, so much so that they are willing to forego the possibility of more profit to serve the Church.
