Is conservatism really tied to free-market ideas, or was that just a temporary thing, when markets seemed to be working in favor of white middle and working class Christians?

For what it's worth, his (Sen's) award predated the book.

Depends on how you want to define "conservatism." Is it a static set of principles? Is it simply what self-identified conservatives think and do? Whatever it is, I think it's having a postmodern crisis.

Conservatism has been tricked out by President Trump. People who were conservatives were duped into believing that Trump's socialistic programs were conservative. The Republican Platform no longer exists; there is not a single plank therein. Nothing about abortion, free markets and so forth. The GOP puts up on its website the 2016 platform but doesn't highlight the fact that it no longer has a platform.

Don't like the Chinese? Accuse them of market and currency manipulation and boycott their products and refuse to let Americans buy their phones. The result? Higher prices for consumers, but American Unions love it.

Redo NAFTA (originally negotiated by Republicans) and coerce manufacturers of TVs and automobiles to relocate to the US? The result? Higher prices. The unions love that.

Don't like Mexicans and Central Americans? Threaten and bully to keep them out of our labor markets. The Unions love that.

I think the tricking out predates Trump. I think maybe conservatives did a deal with the Devil when they welcomed the racist remnants of the south and the evangelicals into their tent. I don’t either group was ever committed to the principles of conservatism. Trump just woke them up to the fact that, combined, there were more of them then there are economic conservatives.

What they are doing has nothing to do with socialism. They don’t want government to own the means of production. They don’t want the wall to protect unions — they want to protect their status as a racial majority. They’re happy with big government dominated by industry as long as they can control who people they don’t like have sex with. There are no principles — it’s all results oriented

The classic conservatives stoked resentment in these groups for decades. They’ve reaped what they’ve sown.

So now, the small government, free market, principled conservatives are held hostage by theocrats and fascists. Now the dominant groups are those who believe regulation of the market is necessary to achieve anything resembling a fair and just system and those who want to wield government power to control other people’s people’s private lives and make those black and brown people stay out of power.

I have no idea how you regain control over your party. Maybe you make a deal with a new Devil. ;)
