Thanks, BCSpace. That then likely pre-dates November 1988, which is the date of the BYUI talk. Your time frame suggests that Elder Cook was telling this story earlier.

Have you read the BYUI transcript? I'm wondering if what you recall having heard is the same or you noticed any differences?

I looked this up on HolyFetch.com, which is sorta the Snopes.com of Mormon faith promoting rumors, and their write-up of this bit of Mormon lore says that the Jagger-Cook conversation is true, but the site offers nothing in the way of evidence other than Cook's say-so, so meh.

This part of the article made me giggle (yes, I am a man who giggles):

Jagger then said loudly, so everyone could hear, that the Book of Mormon was a lie and that anyone who believed in it was a liar. Cook took out a Book of Mormon and placed it in Jagger's lap and said, "You say it is a lie. I must have missed that part. Show me." There was complete silence.

Yes, I'm sure that Jagger was shamed into silence by the power of Cook's testimony. This part of the story is a red flag for me; it too conveniently evokes the Mormon popular myth of critics being silenced by the power of the believer's testimony (e.g, Joseph Smith in Liberty Jail).

I think Cook is channeling Paul Dunn.

#1. The Stones don't fly commercial, and didn't fly commercial 20 years ago either. They either fly in their own jet or they rent a jet.

#2. Mick Jagger would never talk to his seatmate, if he was unfortunate enough to have to fly commercial.

#3. Mick Jagger would never yell for the entire plane to hear, if he was to fly commercial. He'd want to keep his head down and remain anonymous, so he didn't get buried by people wanting autographs.

#4. Mick Jagger's bodyguards would be in seats all around him, if he was unfortunate enough to fly commercial.

Good grief. The least they could do is come up with a believable story. I didn't believe it the first time I heard and I don't believe it now either.

I doubt that Gene R. Cook made up the story from scratch but who knows what the real conversation was. Mick Jagger could've just been having fun with him because he came off as a self-righteousness prick.

harmony totally cut to the chase here. I'm pretty sure that the last time the Stones bothered with public transportation would've been back in the 60's. Jagger is beyond wealthy with a personal fortune estimated in the hundreds of millions.

Why on earth would Jagger fly commercial or fly alone? If he were to fly commercial, I assume that he would have bought out first class or the entire flight in order to do it. His presence alone would have caused public mayhem on a commercial flight.

When was the last time anyone has seen a photo of Jagger in an airport beyond the 60's?

The story says that Jagger said (for all the plane to hear) that the Book of Mormon was a lie. For all the plane to hear? From where? First class?

Is Elder Cook implying that Jagger spoke loud enough for all the plane to hear and that knowing that Jagger was on the flight, everyone remained calmly in their seats?

Yeah right.

If such an encounter took place, I would have to assume that Jagger was screwing with him for shock value. But I can't think of a single reason why Jagger would be on a commercial flight, make his presence known and supply provocative answers regarding religion on a plane packed with citizens.

Questions:

Do the GA's fly first class? How so? Who pays for it?

Consideration should be given that elder Cook may have had the wool pulled over his eyes. Was someone just pulling his chain and pretending to be Mick Jaggar? Has anyone ever thought of that?

I find it odd that a Mormon GA would manage to find an empty seat next to one of the greatest rock gods this world has ever known. It doesn't add up. I tend to agree with Harmony's points.

Over on the other board I noticed DCP admitted to have attended a Stones concert before he was old enough to drive. Did anyone else see that post? I'm saddened that he is attacking me personally on that board by telling them what I've said over here while downing a little too much Jack Daniels last night. I'm paying the price with a killing headache.
