Nobody wants the BYU athletic programs ...
The Pac-10 doesn't seem to want BYU, but they'll take Utah. The Big 12, if it stays together, doesn't seem to want BYU. The Big 12 leftover doesn't seem to want to go to the Mountain West. I'm not even sure the rest of the Mountain West wants BYU, but they are stuck with them. What gives? Is it an anti-Mormon thing?

No one in their right mind wants whining hypocrites on the schedule. BYU got their butts kicked big time by Marshall in football a few years ago and the comments after the game on the part of BYU players: "They weren't really very good". So, how bad was BYU to get whomped by 'not very good'?
BYU can join with Utah Valley, USU, Cedar City U, Dixie college, snow college and some other nearby schools and start their own conference.

Oklahoma must really suck, then.

It's pretty much official -- Utah's leaving the Mountain West. I don't know how that will effect BYU's future. It makes it less likely they will ever play in a BCS bowl. And the best Mormon athletes in Utah will probably opt for Utah instead of BYU now.

Is part of this BYU's refusal to play on Sundays?

The Pac-10 doesn't want any religious school -- they wouldn't even take Notre Dame. That's one reason Baylor was not going to make the move to the Pac-10 with the rest of the Big 12.

Wow. They lost a game 11 years ago to an undefeated team and you think that has any thing at all to do with the conferences' decisions this year? You don't follow football very much, do you?

I'm not sure what BYU even gains by having a major college athletic program. I don't think many people choose to go to BYU so they can attend the football and basketball games. If BYU suddenly said the cost of the athletic programs aren't worth the effort, would BYU really suffer? Seems like they get as much negative press from it as they do positive.

Re: Nobody wants the BYU athletic programs ...
Mid majors are typically something very taboo and must be avoided in major college sports, specifically football. Any team from the MWC is a mid major. Utah has been good since 2002-2003 season. Previous to that time they were never a major player on the football scene, not even worth discussing. Odds are, Utah will become like Louisville and suck after the first or second year in a major conference. The gimmick of this mid major will die out.
As for BYU...BYU is not that good, nor worth considering in the major markets. One Utah team is plenty enough for any BCS conference. Add religion into that and no mid major is acceptable.

While BYU's religious nature might be a detractor, the main point was to get the PAC-10 into the greater Salt Lake City television market (as was getting Colorado to get into the Denver market).
