Any sports fans here?

Post by _Markk »

I'm sitting here watching ESPN and they just reported that U of Utah will join the Pac Ten, to bad it couldn't have been BYU, I wonder if they were in the running or even had a interest, any news from Utah folk on this, it is the first I heard?

BYU was not in the running for the PAC10 since they're a religious school. Hopefully they get invited to the Big 12 someday.

And yes, I live in Utah and this has been bigtime news over the last couple weeks.

Thanks, Is there something in the pac ten charter that says that religious schools can't join? I bet if ND wanted in they would let them and their TV contract in?

Its likely that the Church's bigotry towards gays and its actions in the California and Arizona elections did not help their position with those schools… Not playing on Sunday for many of the sports may have been a factor as well.

Officially the Pac-10 requires its members to be "research" institutions. Utah is such an institution, whereas BYU is a teaching institution. But I doubt that would have made a difference, as BYU's focus and culture aren't really compatible with the Pac-10.

It will be interesting to see how Utah does. I figure they're about middle of the pack in the new Pac-10. Better than Colorado and Stanford and the two Washington schools. Probably on par with the Arizona and Oregon schools. This will definitely impact BYU's recruiting of LDS athletes.

Personally I would like to see them come and play a tough schedule, they have 4 or 5 gimme games every year.

In what way, I say that the better Utah athletes would go to U Of U for the exposure?

I would imagine if you're from Utah, you'd rather play in the Pac-10 than in the MWC. I would, anyway.

Not in the pac ten though, at least most years. I know the pac ten doesn't always have the best teams but they have arguably the best athletes in the nation.
