Reality from friends in Athletic Departments from a few PAC 10 schools is simple. Research Universities only. BYU is a teachers college, not a Research University.
That is what they say for the reason BYU can't get invited to their conference.

Re: Nobody wants the BYU athletic programs ...
Utah would have had an uphill struggle against Boise State anyway in football. Things will be tough for them in the PAC-10 as well. BYU and Utah really came into their own when the Arizona schools left for the PAC-10.
If nothing else, this will make the rivalry between Utah and BYU less intense. Perhaps the fans can now cheer for both schools. Although for some Utah fans, the anyone but BYU will still apply and for some BYU fans, the air of universal arrogance will remain. Let's hope the majority will be kinder and gentler.
Some in the Texas legislature are pushing to have TCU and Houston fill the void in keeping the Big 12 at 12. This might mean that the Mountain West could conceivably bring in Utah State. This would mean that BYU could be dominant in basketball and all other non-football sports.
The Red Rock gymnasts of Utah could finally face an uphill battle being together with UCLA and Stanford.

I think this might kill BYU's ability to recruit the top football players in Utah. It won't hurt the basketball program since the Mountain West is clearly better than the Pac-10 in basketball. The Utes might pick up some better football recruits out of state as well.

recruiting will never die at BYU. I have a friend that is currently playing for BYU and he had offers from Ohio State, Penn State, Pitt, Michigan and others and all he wanted was an offer from BYU. He wanted to play for the "Lord's University" so he waiting and finally word got to BYU and he got an offer. There are lots of Mormon athletes and the pressure is always on to play at BYU.

He wanted to play for the "Lord's University"
In a visit to Tulsa some years back Oral Roberts told me his Oral Roberts University was "The Lords University".
The folks at Bob Jones University say the same thing about their school.
Some at Notre Dame say it also while others say it is Knute Rocknes University as He was God.

Actually, we who work at Notre Dame always refer to it as Our Lady's University which of course is the direct translation for Notre Dame.
