And because our SP's wife has a real hangup about the handcart companies, we were once again worshipping at their feet during the program for the 24th of July in my ward. But the handcart companies are not connected to the Nauvoo exodus are they? I thought the Nauvoo exodus was one of wagons, not handcarts.
You are correct. The handcarts came about 9 years later.
I reference them because if you exclude the handcart companies from the mortality rates, I would be easily criticized for doing so. Without the handcart companies, the trans-continental mortality rates were very low and equated stay-at-home populations or within 1 percent.
The handcart companies certainly had a higher mortality rate than stay-at-home populations if you include Willie and Martin. But far less than the Donner party, and Willie and Martin were far less than Willie and Martin.
I think it is entirely appropriate to venerate the sacrifice and courage of the handcart companies.

Huh?
I think it is entirely appropriate to venerate the sacrifice and courage of the handcart companies.
Balderdash. Their sacrifice and courage was no different from anyone else's.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.
"There were some very remarkable people in the handcart companies."
Yes there were. As well as some very stupid and misguided people as well as 'leaders'. Starting too late was criminal but no one was prosecuted or excommunicated for what they inflicted on this group, were they?

No, it wasn't "criminal." There was no criminality.
No, it wasn't "stupid" and "misguided". Except for the Willie and Martin companies, the companies started timely.
As to them, they had their freedom of will to do as they pleased. As David Roberts documents, they indeed did so, with many of them backing out and making the trek later.
