Self Awareness

Letter was read during SM warning members about self-awareness groups. The look on the face of some on the stand were quite animated when they basically said that these self awareness groups encourage late-night early-morning meetings, encouraging husband and wife to be paired with other parties and physical contact among participants.

While most on the stand were raising eyebrows and looking basically disgusted or confused, one guy looked like, he desired a little self-awareness.

I have never heard of such self-awareness groups asking participants to do anything but to explore one's feelings and understand why they think and believe the way they do.

My question is: Is this really a problem for LDS memebers to be joinging self-awareness groups, or is this just a warning for LDS members to not seek answers from anyone but the Bishop in regards to their feelings??

I never heard of this warning before and did not know it was a problem, but it was read from the FP at SM

Isn't this avatar just another church related poster called follow? Certainly somene shouldn't be painting them on various construction wall sites, but I thought it was funny covering up a post no bills wall.

Seriously? What you describe sounds like a self-help group or a certain type of motivational life coaching. There are no set rules or regulatory requirements for what self-help/motivational/life coaching groups do. I think self-awareness is the wrong term. Maybe not, but it seems like the term is being misused. Was this read church-wide? Or just in your ward?

I wonder about the description. It sounds fairly specific like something going on in a certain area. Weird.

Oh, and I like the Avatar. Simon need to work on his charity and not being so easily offended.

I have no idea of what is involved with these self-awareness type organizations, but to me the description as read by the Bishop sounded like beware of anything relating to selff-awareness organizations because these type of things happen at them.

I had read something about this being read 10 years ago or so I think, but resurfacing this year in another ward. It was discussed on MADB recently if I remember correctly.

So it was read in your ward today as well?

As a side note on the subject, I recently read a great book titled, "Bright Sided" by Barbara Ehrenreich about self-help groups and the influence of positive thinking on American culture.

Well worth the money and the time to read it.

Also read was a letter about how members should turn to local leaders for answers to doctrinal questions and stop sending these questions to church headquarters. I kind of thought that the two messages were to get the local leaders more involved to help both doctrinal issues (spiritual) and self-doubt (emotional) type issues.
