1. Have common interests with whomever you decide to date. If you enjoy music and theater, date a girl who is into that. If you enjoy video games, date a girl who likes video games. If you enjoy skiing, date a girl who likes skiing. You get the idea.

2. If you are interested in getting serious with the girl you're dating, if you want to "get in good with the parents", have a plan for your life. If you're going to school, decide on a major. Have an idea what you would like to do career-wise. You can only "live on love" for so long. :-)
