Mormons. . . Best Parents EVA!!!
Okay, if ya know me, ya know that the title is a bit sarcastic. This is coming from the John Dehlin thread where Why Me is trying to say that Mormon values are involved even when ExMos claim they are raising "good kids" outside the religion.
I could go into my own experience with my parents and call BS! But, I don't think it's any secret about Porter's experience growing up with his Mormon parents abuse to him and his siblings. If Mormonism was the "core" there, where was it with his parents? Where was it with my own, where was it with so many others that had similar experiences growing up. How about Brian David Mitchell who grew up Mormon? How about his wife Wanda Barzee's children and their childhood which they discussed on Oprah How mormonly of them.
Porter kids didn't turn out great kids because of anything to do with Mormonism, they turned out great kids because he is raising kids to THINK!
Regardless of religion or whatever, striving for autonomy is the bottom line in raising good kids.

I can't agree more.
Funny that my TBM family and friends are just waiting for the day my kids turn out rotten due to the lack of the Spirit causing swelling motions in primary.

Zee, if they are anything like you, they'll be brilliant! How can they escape being somewhat brilliant? Don't listen to the haters!

People are people. There are lots of conscientious parents in the world of every belief, non-belief, race, culture, sexual orientation, and economic level. My guess is that the last factor makes more difference than many of the others.

Re,
We'll see if any of my kids decide to be chemical engineers. :)

Although I am confident that there are many Mormon parents that do a fabulous job raising their kids, I believe that "good parenting" has very little to do with what "religion" you happen to paste to your chest. After all, it seems worthy to at least consider that there are many parents who change/modify/eliminate their "religion" at some point during their parenting years.

Is he suggesting that Mormons have cornered the market on these values? I wonder if he's trying to suggest that Mormons own the market on good values in child rearing. If he is, he's completely wrong.
Other than that, I don't see how its offensive to think that ex-LDS rever back to LDS ideas of values when raising kids, particularly if those ex-LDS see those particular ideas and values as beneficial. That's of course not to suggest that non-never-been-LDS don't also find common goodness in values LDS define as good, particularly in child-rearing.

Stem, can you name one "value" that LDS claim to teach children that is not common to the rest of the world?

I guess I wasn't clear, I'm indeed suggesting LDS do not have a corner on the market of good values to teach kids. In this I'd say there very well is not a value that LDS claim to teach children that is not common to others.
I think i"m sounding like Wade now--my evolution to evocative LDS thinker is complete.

Red, such a nice thing to say about me and my kids :)
My kids are growing into wonderful citizens because I am raising them
GODLESS.
Seriously.
I think raising your kids without the fear of god is a good way to raise a family.
The fear of reality is much more convincing.
