I suggest others do the same in these situations.

I completely agree in theory, but if you get the unexpected missionary drop-bys because you're still on the list, it might be worth the letter just to get them to leave you alone. That was the only reason I did it (plus, it was fun to write my resig letter... I really let them know what I thought of their church at the time. Haven't heard from them since).

I would rather experience getting ex'd because it is more interesting. I would also try to record it with a hidden sound recorder.

Hello,

I resigned. I don't understand giving a bunch of polyester-clad nobodies the delight in exercising their supernonexistentpriesthoodpowers.

I wonder if DCP would give them 2 weeks notice.

Thanks to the internet, many of us are aware of the option to resign. It is the best way to remind the Mormon hierarchy that they have no legal power and authority over anyone that will not give it to them. Why would anyone in their right mind submit to the humiliation and personal violation of excommunication?

I decided to resign a few years ago as I read the story of Lyndon Lamborne (you can google his story).

The biggest problem with choosing excommunication (or being acted upon) is that your family that remain Mormon receives the taint of an embarrassing negative stigma. Once a person is ex'd, the records are "sealed". People can only wonder why the church would choose to seperate you from them - immorality etc. I wanted to be sure that I could tell my story without the leadership saying "there is more to the story that is sooooo bad that we cannot tell". Resigning still makes you a carrier of an infection that you can give to your family and friends, but in a good way. Resigning makes you much more approachable for an explanation from others.

I never worry about members coming by, and I am willing to visit with them. It can be very dangerous to their LDS beliefs though. :) I even go to church from time to time. Look, I see no reason to hate the church or it's members. Most of my family and many of my friends are members and good people. I will continue to associate with the church in some fashion, but if they for some reason wanted to excommunicate and move my name from one list to another I don't really care. It will make no difference in my life either way.

DCP will never leave or stop believing. He has to many circumstances in life for him to get their mentally, so he will remain very biased to the evidence. Many of have been their but not to his extent. His whole livelihood is dependent on it. He has also been very public about defending the church.

Resign.

The LDS church would get a resignation letter along with an outline drawing of my middle finger / and or a dried turd inserted between the folded pages before I ever submitted to fear-based and religious authoritarian power in the form of an excommunication proceeding.

If an angel with a flaming sword commanded me to attend, or have the world go up in flames for my disobedience, I would attend, and when it was my turn to speak, the only message that I would give would be the visceral image of my jumping up on the grand table, dropping my shorts and dropping a Cleveland Steamer right there on the plastic doily in the middle of the laminated wood table.

Resign.
