Mormon.org -- "select an ethnicity"
I just noticed the "select an ethnicity" option on Mormon.org and it caused me to wonder when ethnicity started being important to Church PR. I seem to remember a Church representative replying to a question about how many black members there were by saying that the Church doesn't keep track of the racial background of members.

You're confusing ethnicity with race.
By selecting an ethnicity or gender, a visitor can see a video of someone just like them.

So what's the significance of that? Are we trying to point out that Latter-day Saints are not just people of European ancestry from the Western U.S.? Why should it matter what the ethnic background of a Church member is? As Church members aren't we "no longer strangers and aliens, but ... fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God"?

Sweet. I wonder if they have a video of white, heterosexual, middle class, male, that can relate to me on my ethnic level.

How pandering, indeed.

Read what in the Trib?
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.
