I was making assumptions on your military comment based on what he's told me about your wonderful country. Sounds like a joy to live in.

However, sounds like one of these days you guys may require a military to save your country from the Arab takeover.

Having successfully raised 8 children (6 sons, 2 daughters) past teenage-hood, this question is difficult. Communication is the most difficult part about being a parent. I only had 3 rules for the kids: I want to know where you are, who you're with, and get your butt home by midnight. And for the most part, they obeyed them (mainly because obeying those rules came with a set of car keys that was instantly confiscated should I have reason to believe rules had been broken... and because they love me). More rules than that made life too complicated.

We have no way of knowing what's going on in that girl's head, nor do we know what kind of relationship she has with her parents. Her parents may think the relationship is swell/great/wonderful, while the girl thinks it sucks/suffocates/stifles. We have no way of knowing if she's popular with the guys her age, or if they ignore her completely. If it's the latter, no wonder she digs on this guy. This guy may be a passing crush that the parents are pushing into something it's not. She may dump him the day after graduation. It may continue next fall when she goes away to college. We don't get to know any of the details.

So all I can go on is that this kid is now 18. Whether or not she lives at home is immaterial; her parents have no power. They can throw her out of the house, but they can't force her to obey any house rules. Any opportunities they had to influence her are past. Let's hope they didn't squander those opportunities.

Whilst I have empathy for the obviously distressed father, I personally think that making a fuss about it (as he has started to do) will have the opposite effect to the one he is trying to have.

I can easily see how good parents can end up doing more harm then good.

LOL The funny thing is that believing members here feel the same way about this situation with the non-believing members, but not when you see the same thing with Joseph Smith.

PS. Spurven, if you only knew how I try to chase military recruiters from my local high school. I have told them off in the past, and, in fact, did it just recently. Their recruitment efforts were severely reduced this year. If my efforts pay off, they won't have the chance to recruit there next year at all..

KA, I agree with you completely regarding military recruiters in high schools, however, unless your school does not receive federal funding and does not allow colleges and employers to recruit on their premises...there is no way for you to disallow military recruiters from doing their thing in your public high school unless you are prepared to repeal federal law, etc.

The magic number is 25, not 18.

That said, I would be horrified if parents could still control their kids until they turned 25. The only thing we can do short of changing the law (which might not be such a bad idea), is try reasoning with an adolescent. Good luck--you're gonna need it. Maybe the movie Cinepro mentioned would help?

I think it would also be best if people put off marriage until after 25 due to brain development issues. However, there the longer one waits to have children, the more certain complications are likely to arise with pregnancy and the child. Yet if you have the child at a young age, you are less likely to be emotionally and financially prepared to care for the child.

ETA: and by change the law I am referring to changing the law to protect early 20-ish people from guys 10+ years older. I'm not in favor at all of keeping 18 year-olds under the thumbs of their parents.
