Spurv,
Oh god, I'm just shaking my head here.
His comment is blunt, but I see what he's saying.
If the girl joined the army the day after graduation (which is likely going to take place next week), she'd be thrown in the deep end without mom and dad to shelter her... and she could have sex every night with a multitude of partners, and/or depending on her training, could like end up on the business end of machine gun or driving a truck behind enemy lines.
The average age of active army is 19, if I remember right. While studies may show the average brain matures at 25, the law says the average 16 year old can decide if they want to continue to attend school, get an abortion, or engage in sex/get married. Age and maturity have very little bearing on the legal age of adulthood... and parents can't stop the clock.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

I don't think women are supposed to serve in combat, with the caveat that the current battlefield is often urban and not clearly defined, and women in support roles might find themselves in danger based on surprise attacks.
Whatever appears to be against the Book of Mormon is going to be overturned at some time in the future. So we can be pretty open minded.-charity 3/7/07
MASH quotes I peeked in the back [of the Bible] Frank, the Devil did it. I avoid church religiously. This isn't one of my sermons, I expect you to listen.
We push kids to make decisions about career/education before they are 25. Furthermore, even if the brain matures at 25 there's still the question of experience and knowledge. I've learned plenty since I was 25.
I'm curious about something else though. While most people only feel outrage at huge age differences such as this one, I hear that there some overprotective fathers / brothers who disapprove of all boyfriends even when the man is the same age as the woman and is a decent fellow. Why is that?
That's General Leo. He could be my friend if he weren't my enemy. eritis sicut dii I support NCMO
This should run both ways. I think society is more willing to let an 18 year old male decide to be with a 33 year old woman.
However, I don't think that it is as appealing to the 33 year old woman to date a 18 year old male, as it is to a 33 year old man to be dating an 18 year old female.
Given this new knowledge about all the naïve 18 year old males, I've been wasting time! I could be out there manipulating, breaking-hearts, and taking names! Totally been going the wrong direction about all this!
I hope this thread is not played out. I hate long threads and rarely even look at ones over 4 pages.. (I wish we could get rid of a lot of the crap in the middle).
Here is another concern that my friend shared with me tonight and it scares the hell out of me as well (by the way, I have a teenage daughter too).
1) If you Google, "barely legal" (for example) you're going to get a disturbing (horrific) eyefull of prostituted young girls getting unspeakable things done to them. These lurid sites get millions of hit a year by guys looking to get off on teenagers. Why would a 33 year old man magnate to a 17-18 year old girl?
2) At 33, this guy has had sex. In fact, he probably has enough experience to know how to take a woman to heaven and back. God knows, most kids don't know how this all works. Kids who abstain till marriage probably don't have a clue for quite a while - maybe even years. If this girl has sex with this guy, how will it affect her emotionally in subsequent relationships, particularly if she has a actual meaningful relationship with someone her own age? This is the part where good guys may truly suffer by comparison.
