Yet I'm torn on this issue: The article says that one guy lost 5 million dollars. I don't know whether I should be sad that he lost 5 million dollars or jealous that he had an extra 5 million dollars of disposable income just laying around to be invested.

The guy probably didn't know it was a ponzi scheme. He probably thought it was a legitimate investment.
