I think the bigger the deal they make of it the worse it's gonna get. They just need to stop obsessing about it. Seriously.
I am sure that gambling is a problem for a percentage of the church as well and I never hear about that. Ever.

Yes, the LDS response to porn just makes it worse - it's the abstinence violation effect

There's a reason why Utah is #1 for porn in the US. If they'd stop obsessing about it, it would be far less prevalent among the Elders of Zion.

just me wrote:Here is a Q&A from the site:

Q: Is casual consumption of pornography a problem?

A: From Dr. Jill Manning’s point of view, pornography use to any degree, even if it involves one exposure, can be problematic if it:
1. Violates trust within a relationship
2. Puts employment or school admission at risk
3. Fuels global demand for this material
4. Reinforces or introduces beliefs which promote misogynistic views and attitudes
5. Is incongruent with religious or personal values and/or commitments
6. Increases the risk that children in the home will be exposed
7. Decreases well-being

Kinda hilarious to see that misogynistic attitudes are considered a problem.

Funny, they never minded misogyny before. If misogyny was really a problem for the church leadership, they'd take out section 132.

Oh, snap.

Have any DHs out there tried writing a steamy short story for your my wife? I think I will give it a go. It will be my first attempt at porn production. My story will definitely include a Daniel Craig character (for the edification of both of us).

Anyway... I think the reason this issue is so big in the church is because husbands have totally forgotten that they live with a female. They grow up with an idea of what a woman looks like then they go through the temple and wonder "where did she go?"

Really?

As a married Mormon woman in her mid-40's, I would have to strongly disagree! ;-)

It is likely that neither one is experienced and they don't know what makes a woman, uh, happy. She strives never to think about it (gotta have pure thoughts)...

Throw in garments and it's the perfect tingle kill.

I wish I had paid more attention to the movie characters my wife liked during our early marriage. Can you imagine Russell Crowe begging or manipulating his wife for sex? Why didn't I see that? Sometimes, she needs a guy like Gladiator. But I was never taught in church how to be a gladiator!

Inc wrote:Another peculiar (and albeit ridiculous) recommendation the psychologists on the site give is to seek out clergy for assistance in overcoming the "problem". Mormon clergy are perhaps the least qualified of all denominations to deal with any issue - they have no knowledge or experience. I mean these guys are plumbers, MLM's, real estate agents, podiatrists.. what the hell?

I think these Mormon psychologists primarilly recommend clergy over someone with a degree in mental health because the rest of the world views this subject from an entirely different perspective.

Inc, you make an excellent point. If someone has a problem with any type of addiction, they should be receiving help from a licensed professional. Even if the Church offered more training in counseling, Bishops are much too stretched to take this on in addition to everything else they have on their plate. Like you said, Bishops and counselors come from all different walks of life as far as professions are concerned. Someone who has an additction problem needs the help of a professional specialist who is trained in that area of expertise.

As far as how the world views addiction, here is a viable definition from Wikipedia:
Historically, addiction has been defined as physical and psychological dependence on psychoactive substances (for example alcohol, tobacco, heroin and other drugs) which cross the blood-brain barrier once ingested, temporarily altering the chemical milieu of the brain.
Addiction can also be viewed as a continued involvement with a substance or activity despite the negative consequences associated with it. Pleasure and enjoyment would have originally been sought; however, over a period of time involvement with the substance or activity is needed to feel normal.[1] Some psychology professionals and many laymen now mean 'addiction' to include abnormal psychological dependency on such things as gambling, food, sex, pornography, computers, internet, work, exercise, idolizing, watching TV or certain types of non-pornographic videos, spiritual obsession, self-injury and shopping.[2][3][4][5]

(Bold emphasis mine)

People can be addicted to behaviors as well as substances, and this is recognized in general society. The key to an activity being classified as an addiction is:

1. Continuing the activity in spite of the clear negative consequences.
2. Where the activity was initially engaged in to feel pleasure, an addicted person engages in the activity merely to feel "normal".

Based on these findings, I am confident that licensed professionals would be able to guide truly addicted patients through the needed processes. And, the Church is wrong in not encouraging members to go through these professional channels.

By this description Mormonism should be classed as an addiction!

Years ago I remember listening to some news show that was discussing political issues in the middle east. A commenter pointed out how some of the governments in middle east rather than addressing the real issues that their people faced— poverty, unemployment, human rights, religious extremism and gender issues— instead would focus on the issues in Palestine/Israel and what they see as the oppression of the the Palestinian people by Israel. The commenter felt the tactic was merely a way to deflect attention away from the failings of the government by finding a common enemy to focus the anger on.

I have no doubt that the LDS Church dislikes porn. But I can't help but wonder if that the huge emphasis placed on porn isn't to some degree a calculated distraction from some really serious issues that Church has....and an easier way to dismiss it's critics than actually dealing with them.

LOL!

True---Just as ALL religions...not just Mormonism...would be defined as cults using the following broad-based definition:
Cult (religious practice), the totality of external religious practice and observance, the neglect of which is the definition of impiety.
