It occurs to me in the wake of the SGW weekend fiasco that there are LDS defenders that read and post here but do not like MDB how it is. S. Belmont definitely would like to silence criticism of the LDS Church and the discussion of its sordid history, so that believers can 'practice their religion' peacefully.
For those critics that did a Saturday stint on one of the other boards, I've heard that it was refreshing that Droopy, for one, was piped down very quickly. So critics too enjoy the heavy hand of affirmative moderation, when it suits their proclivities.
For me, a place that allows all voices a forum is great. It's why I am here, and it's why I resist "new rules" or expansions or extensions of existing rules. Rules
Temporarily at least, Dr Shades has requested that no poll threads be created. If poll threads were currently fair game, I would have created this thread as a poll with a number of plausible aspects of MDB that defenders want changed and why. Instead just this non-poll thread will do.
Defenders, if it were up to you, would you change at MDB and why? Would all criticism of the LDS Church be ver boten? Have you yourself hi-jacked a thread, or complained about the OP or how it was worded, in order to divert the discussion on the merits of a topic that is thorny for the LDS Church? You have your forums (not just online, but in real life) for meeting with just the faithful to discuss and promote the LDS Church. Does it bother you that there are now, primarily online, places for ex-Mos and never Mos to discuss Mormon matters and take issue with the LDS Church's stances and actions? Since you have your own forums, why are you troubled that there could be contra-forums?
Critics, would you really want a heavier handed moderation, even if it were only directed at shrill defenders like Droopy?
Why do defenders want to change MDB?

The only minimum requirements for using this board should be adequate knowledge of the quote function.
[I think that means someone is going to have to stop posting. . .]
Other than that I think banning should be on a case by case manner. I don't think anymore moderation is necessary. We already have quite a bit more than we did when this board first started up in late 2006. Then it was truly the Wild West.

Whatever appears to be against the Book of Mormon is going to be overturned at some time in the future. So we can be pretty open minded.-charity 3/7/07

Re: Why do defenders want to change MDB?
I'd like to go on record that I don't want to see Droopy banned from this board.
But I am happy for it to be known that I was very amused by the reaction to him on another board to which we temporarily migrated, where TBMs are specifically forbidden to harass people. "Hey guys" said the host moderator "you are welcome here, but what's this that has followed you in?". Droopy had the rules explained to him, but, arrogant as ever, ignored them.
This immediately resulted in his being heaved overboard without further warning, after which all we heard from him was the sound of bones being crunched by sharks. Sweet!
Mark you I still think he is entitled to credit for beating a major addiction, even if it does not seem to have done much to make him either nicer or less boringly obsessive online.

I get your points, Chap, to be, that you would not want more moderation here, even though you did delight in seeing Droopy get punished on another board for flaunting the rules of that other board.

It is a moment that I will forever treasure. Thanks for mentioning it again.
