No. It is "an idea, behavior or style that spreads from person to person within a culture." (Wiki)

It's a cultural reproductive element, or something that spreads and becomes popular to say/do (like people saying, "Sweet!" People never said that when I was growing up, but they say it all the time now).

The term was coined by Richard Dawkins in his first book, I believe.

It also seems to have been borrowed for a picture of someone with a caption added that is usually supposed to be in some way humorous - and it is in that sense that someone posted obscene 'memes' about Juliann here:

[LINK TO SITE CONTAINING OBSCENE CONTENT DELETED]

on top of which various MDB persons have posted other memes to flush the nasty stuff off the front page.

Yeah, I know it is a waste of time, but if you give LDS a chance to think that all exmos/nevermos are evil, they'll take it. And by definition people who turn up on a board like this are confessing at least a minimal interest in the way LDS see the world.
Zadok:
I did not have a faith crisis. I discovered that the Church was having a truth crisis.
Maksutov:
That's the problem with this supernatural stuff, it doesn't really solve anything. It's a placeholder for ignorance.

I confess a minimal interest in the way LDS see the world, but I have no real interest in changing it. I observe and comment on it, but don't imagine I have an impact one way or the other on most occasions. I think people who do are largely fooling themselves.

It's like when I hear the old canard "People only leave the church to sin." Who cares if they think that? LDS are free to imagine that of me if they wish, and I don't care to change their weak attempt to defend the church's honor. It doesn't change reality any more than bearing their testimony makes the church true.

A meme in internet lingo is just an idea or style - usually a funny picture, joke format, or video - that becomes very popular in an internet community by people spreading it person to person.

Picture captions are particularly popular. Memegenerator took this and provided a format for people to create their own memes without having photoshop skills.

Here's some wildly popular internet memes in the memegenerator style:

Bill O'Reilly's "You can't explain that" - http://www.memehumor.com/index.php/cate ... xplain-it/

High Expectations Asian Father - http://highexpectationsasianfather.tumblr.com/

The the ever popular lolcatz - http://icanhascheezburger.com/

A Juliann meme that would've been kosher would've involved something like making fun of her dictatorial moderating and ban-happiness. Mocking her personal life and making obscene comments is just wrong.

Wasn't me. I don't know Juliann, I've never interacted with her, I had no idea what she even looked like until all of this. I don't think I've ever mentioned her name in a post before this one.

That being said, I think some of you are acting pretty silly about this whole thing.

It's just butthurt over Will Schryver. I'm not sure why they don't take it up with the Maxwell Institute - they're the ones that really hurt will, not us.

For the record, this was my cheeky comment, indirectly related to the Juliann memes:

Tator wrote:
Everybody Wang Chung wrote:The meme about Will Schryver being Juliann's lover is pretty mean. Really, hasn't Will been through enough already? There is no reason to punish him any further by implying that he is Juliann's lover.

Is Juliann being insulted here or is it Will?

liz wrote:Will!

Not even Will deserves Juliann!

;-)

At that point, I had only read the first page of memes, which consisted of Juliann's obsession with banning posters. Those were humorous, rather stupid, and seemed harmless, in my estimation.

Everyone knows that there is certainly no love lost between myself and Juliann. I have referred to her quite openly here as a bitch, and I'm sure she has, at least privately, referred to me as much of the same.

That being said, I do NOT, in any way, condone the type of grotesque display expressed regarding references to domestic violence, etc.

All links will certainly be removed...and I think we should amend the rules to state that no links should be further allowed to this meme site.

I would also encourage those who may have created those memes to delete them.

Manatees are very ethical writers. If you keep trying to censor us, we may just stop working.

Just sayin'.

Hi Liz,

I think we should amend the rules to state that no links should be further allowed to this meme site.

Hmmm...

A few posters link to a site that contains some objectionable material and we are not allowed to link to the site?

It doesn't feel right.

I'm not a meme generator kind of gal, (smile), but I am quite sure there are numerous sites linked on this board that I would find offensive, still I do not feel these sites need to be banned.

I've got to think about this but it doesn't sit well with me.

Reminding everyone that I do NOT condone cruelty and find any joking about abuse disgusting.

You know this for a fact, or you are just surmising?

Pure speculation but it should not be hard to see why I came to this conclusion.

After reading Chap's post, it seems that MDB has actually helped at leat bury some of the more offensive memes that were created.

Great job, guys!
